The enhancement pattern of ectopic pancreas after intravenous iodine contrast administration is the same as that of leiomyoma or carcinoid. This CT finding has not been reported previously to our knowledge.

    Notes: Self-inflicted dermatoses are associated with personality disorders and psychoses, including monosymptomatic hypochondriacal psychosis (MHP), which is characterized by a delusion involving a particular hypochondriacal concern. We report an unusual case of MHP with severe mutilation of the skin complicated by a skull defect and brain abscess. The patient was a 66-year-old uneducated man who damaged his forehead repeatedly because he believed that a ‘toxic root’ in the forehead was the source of his general ailment. He admitted that the lesions were self-inflicted. There was no other evidence of psychosis or primary skin disease and MHP was diagnosed. Despite initial favourable response to pimozide, the patient was lost to follow-up for 4 years, during which he continued to damage his forehead and applied corrosive agents. He was then referred with a personality change and a 6 × 4 cm bony defect in the skull, complicated by herniation and abscess of the left frontal lobe. This case represents one of the most severe examples of self-mutilation ever reported. The differential diagnosis of dermatitis artefacta and the principles of treating MHP are discussed.

    Notes: The one-dimensional (1D) position-sensitive superheated-liquid-droplet in-phantom neutron dosimeter incorporating a sensitive volume emulsion has been fabricated, prepared, and tested. The 1D position-sensitive superheated-liquid-droplet dosimeter (SLDD) is fabricated from a 3/8-in.-o.d., 1/4-in.-i.d., 20-cm-long, PlexiglasTM-walled tube filled with a mixture of superheated-liquid FreonTM droplets and host medium glycerol solution. Washer-shaped piezoelectric acoustic transducers are positioned at both ends of the tube; they determine the number and positions of the acoustic events when the superheated-liquid droplets evaporate upon neutron irradiation. The SLDD is sensitive to a wide range of neutron energy, from thermal (0.0253 eV) up to 10 MeV and higher. The SLDD is irradiated with the 137Cs and 60Co γ sources, as well as a 252Cf neutron source to test for its radiation response and spatial resolution. The SLDD based on the Freon-134a superheated-liquid droplets operating at 20 °C and 1 atm is found to be ideal for measuring neutron depth dose and relative biological effectiveness dose. This study also proves that the position of the radiation-induced nucleation acoustic events can be linearly determined from the differences in the transmission times received by the acoustic transducers on the 1D SLDD. The spatial resolution of the neutron depth dose is 1 mm due to the finite response time (1 μs) of the piezoelectric acoustic transducers. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The time-dependent behavior of quantum cellular automata (QCA) with imperfections is examined. We have studied a chain of quantum cells with the imperfections introduced by (i) variations of intercellular distances, (ii) variations of intercell tunneling strengths, and (iii) stray charges. We find that imperfections like these may easily impair the switching properties of semiconductor based QCAs. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The time-dependent behavior of quantum cellular automata (QCA), chains of quantum-dot cells, is examined. Each cell consists of four quantum dots on the four corners of a square and contains two electrons. Cells interact with nearby cells via Coulomb potentials. We study the time evolution of the polarization of the cells due to the switching of a driver cell for the particular cases of linear chains and L-shaped configurations. Two different approaches are discussed. In the first one dissipation is not considered. For this case numerical results demonstrate that adiabatic switching can be used to implement QCA only for chains of two cells. In the second approach we explicitly include energy dissipation processes in a phenomenological way and obtain the time evolution of the polarization of the cells due to the switching of the driver cell. Dissipation processes are found to give rise to satisfactory response characteristics. For the cases studied no metastable states are found. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Summary We report two patients with an unusu al variant of macular amyloidosis who had diffuse homogeneous hyperpigmentation without papules, a rippled pattern or poikiloderma. The hyperpigmentation was extensive, involving the face, neck, mucosa, axillae, groin and peripheries in one patient and only the face and arms in the other. Skin biopsies in both cases revealed subepidermal band-like amyloid deposits. Neither patient had systemic involvement. The skin lesions in these patients could be easily confused with hyperpigmentation caused by endocrine disorders, drugs, heavy metals, polychlorinated biphenyl or cutaneous inflammation.

    Notes: We quantified the effect of stand age and tree species composition on canopy transpiration (EC) by analysing transpiration per unit leaf area (EL) and canopy stomatal conductance (GS) for boreal trees comprising a five stand wildfire chronosequence. A total of 196 sap flux sensors were used on 90 trees consisting of Betula papyrifera Marsh (paper birch; present in the youngest stand), Populus tremuloides Michx (quaking aspen), Pinus banksiana Lamb. (jack pine), and Picea mariana (Mill.) (black spruce). While fine roots were positively correlated with stand EC; leaf area index, basal area, and sapwood area were not. Stands less than 70 years old were dominated by Populus tremuloides and Pinus banksiana and stands greater than 70 years old were composed almost entirely of Picea mariana. As Populus tremuloides and Pinus banksiana increased in size and age, they displayed an increasing sapwood to leaf area ratio (AS : AL), a constant minimum leaf water potential (ΨL), and a constant proportionality between GS at low vapour pressure deficit (Dj GSref) and the sensitivity of GS to D (–δ). In contrast, AS : AL, minimum ΨL, and the proportionally between –δ and GSref decreased with height and age in Picea mariana. A GS model that included the effects of D, AS : AL, tree height, and for Picea mariana an increasing soil to leaf water potential gradient with stand age, was able to capture the effects of contrasting hydraulic properties of Picea mariana, Populus tremuloides and Pinus banksiana during stand development after wildfire.

    Notes: Abstract: Higher-order approximation techniques for estimating stochastic parameter of the non-homogeneous Poisson (NHP) model are presented. The NHP model is characterized by a two-parameter cumulative probability distribution function (CDF) of sediment displacement. Those two parameters are the temporal and spatial intensity functions, physically representing the inverse of the average rest period and step length of sediment particles, respectively. Difficulty of estimating the parameters has, however, restricted the applications of the NHP model. The approximation techniques are proposed to address such problem. The basic idea of the method is to approximate a model involving stochastic parameters by Taylor series expansion. The expansion preserves certain higher-order terms of interest. Using the experimental (laboratory or field) data, one can determine the model parameters through a system of equations that are simplified by the approximation technique. The parameters so determined are used to predict the cumulative distribution of sediment displacement. The second-order approximation leads to a significant reduction of the CDF error (of the order of 47%) compared to the first-order approximation. Error analysis is performed to evaluate the accuracy of the first- and second-order approximations with respect to the experimental data. The higher-order approximations provide better estimations of the sediment transport and deposition that are critical factors for such environment as spawning gravel-bed.

    Notes: Abstract  A sesquidiploid hybrid (PPS, 2n=32) between Nicotiana plumbaginifolia (PP, 2n=20) and N. sylvestris (SS, 2n=24) was backcrossed to N. plumbaginifolia to produce monosomic alien addition lines. A total of 89 2n=21 plants, each containing two sets of N. plumbaginifolia chromosomes and a single N. sylvestris chromosome, were obtained in the BC1 and BC2 generations. These plants were classified into 12 groups based on morphological characteristics. The N. sylvestris chromosomes in these plants were identified by RFLP and karyotype analyses. Among the 84 probes tested, 20 could not detect N. sylvestris-specific DNA bands, and the remaining 64 were assigned to 9 normal and 6 aberrant synteny groups. The 9 normal synteny groups corresponded to chromosomes 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 12, respectively. Four aberrant synteny groups were the result of chromosome translocations, and 2 were deletions.
