    Notes: Two concepts concerning the deposition of particles from suspension onto a collector, the shadow effect due to deposited particles and the singular and random behavior of approaching particles, are presented and discussed. Based on these concepts, a new theory of particle deposition is proposed and procedures for the simulation of deposition process outlined. The simulation results give the rate of deposition and the deposit morphology. Potential applications of this model to a number of technical problems are outlined.

    Notes: The transient behavior of aerosol filtration in model filters composed of several layers of wire screens was investigated experimentally. The collection efficiency of the filter expressed in terms of the single fiber efficiency was determined under a variety of conditions. The increase in the collection efficiency and pressure drop during the course of filtration was examined. An empirical correlation relating the increase of the collection efficiency as a function of the amount of deposition was established.

    Notes: Summary A multistage process which can be completely characterized by a state variable and a control variable is called a one-dimensional multistage process with a control variable. It is shown that the optimal policy for controlling or operating such a process is to apply an equal control action at each stage when the process is linear in state variables.
