Notes: : The influence of sediment resuspension on the water quality of shallow lakes is well documented. However, a search of the literature reveals no deterministic mass-balance eutrophication models that explicitly include resuspension. We modified the Lake Okeechobee water quality model - which uses the Water Analysis Simulation Package (WASP) to simulate algal dynamics and phosphorus, nitrogen, and oxygen cycles - to include inorganic suspend. ed solids and algorithms that: (1) define changes in depth with changes in volume; (2) compute sediment resuspension based on bottom shear stress; (3) compute partition coefficients for ammonia and ortho-phosphorus to solids; and (4) relate light attenuation to solids concentrations. The model calibration and validation were successful with the exception of dissolved inorganic nitrogen species which did not correspond well to observed data in the validation phase. This could be attributed to an inaccurate formulation of algal nitrogen preference and/or the absence of nitrogen fixation in the model. The model correctly predicted that the lake is light-limited from resuspended solids, and algae are primarily nitrogen limited. The model simulation suggested that biological fluxes greatly exceed external loads of dissolved nutrients; and sediment-water interactions of organic nitrogen and phosphorus far exceed external loads. A sensitivity analysis demonstrated that parameters affecting resuspension, settling, sediment nutrient and solids concentrations, mineralization, algal productivity, and algal stoichiometry are factors requiring further study to improve our understanding of the Lake Okeechobee ecosystem.

Notes: A series of new intramolecular charge transfer compounds with absorption bands in shorter wavelengths have been synthesized. Bright visible light emits from the crystals of these new compounds under infrared pulsed laser pumping. The spectral and pump density dependent properties demonstrate that some of the emissions are up-conversion fluorescence due to two photon absorption. The fluorescent yields of one- and two-photon absorption are in the same order at high pump density. This work demonstrates that these new intramolecular charge transfer crystals are good candidates for nonlinear optical materials. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: : In 1983, current data were collected by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration using mechanical current meters. During 1992 through 1996, acoustic Doppler current profilers as well as mechanical current meters and tide gauges were used. These measurements not only document tides and tidal currents in San Diego Bay, but also provide independent data sets for model calibration and verification. A high resolution (100-m grid), depth-averaged, numerical hydrodynamic model has been implemented for San Diego Bay to describe essential tidal hydrodynamic processes in the bay. The model is calibrated using the 1983 data set and verified using the more recent 1992–1996 data. Discrepancies between model predictions and field data in both model calibration and verification are on the order of the magnitude of uncertainties in the field data. The calibrated and verified numerical model has been used to quantify residence time and dilution and flushing of contaminant effluent into San Diego Bay. Furthermore, the numerical model has become an important research tool in ongoing hydrodynamic and water quality studies and in guiding future field data collection programs.

Notes: Abstract A kind of intramolecular charge-transfer compound, 3-hydroxy-6-methyl-4′-N,N-dimethylamino flavone derivatives (PF), was used to detect the self-association of chitosan bioelectret in aqueous solution. Results showed that the fluorescence intensity of PF at 430 nm increased with increasing chitosan concentration in 0.1 M acetic acid, and concomitantly, the emission at 515 nm decreased. However, no emission was observed at 515 nm after the polarization of chitosan solution and only an increase in the peak of PF at 430 nm could be found. When 0.1 M hydrochloric acid was used to dissolve chitosan and all other conditions were the same as above, the PF peak was weak and did not disappear after the chitosan solution was polarized. In addition, the effect of ionic strength on chitosan aggregation with a concentration of 5 mg ml-1 before and after polarization was examined. The results also showed that the fluorescence intensity of the probe increased remarkably at 430 nm with increasing ionic strength after polarization of the chitosan solution. All the results indicated that polarization can promote the aggregation behaviour of chitosan in aqueous solution. © 1998 Chapman & Hall
