Notes: In this paper we have prepared Fe/Cu, Ag, Au/Fe sandwiches by ion beam sputtering and studied the interlayer coupling behavior by ferromagnetic resonance technique. In these sandwiches the Fe and noble metal layers are polycrystalline in the textures of (110) and (111), respectively. It is found that the in-plane resonance field and the linewidth oscillate as a function of nonmagnetic layer thickness in a period of about 1.0 nm for Fe/Cu, Au/Fe structures, and 1.4 nm for Fe/Ag/Fe system. It is suggested that the interlayer coupling strength between the ferromagnetic layers oscillates in the same period with the resonance field. An in-plane anisotropy was found in Fe/Ag/Fe system. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A new algorithm of quantitative texture analysis, i.e., a modified maximum entropy method, was applied to the texture analysis of polycrystalline thin films. The algorithm program suitable for determining the inverse pole figure of polycrystalline thin films with hexagonal structure was developed and is illustrated with an example of Zn film deposited on Fe substrate. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A formalism is developed for evaluating probabilities and cross sections for multiple-electron transitions in scattering of molecules and clusters by charged collision partners. First, the molecule is divided into subclusters each made up of identical centers (atoms). Within each subcluster coherent scattering from identical centers may lead to observable phase terms and a geometrical structure factor. Then, using a mean field approximation to describe the interactions between centers we obtain AI∼∑k∏keiδkIAIk. Second, the independent electron approximation for each center may be obtained by neglecting the correlation between electrons in each center. The probability amplitude for each center is then a product of single electron transition probability amplitudes, aIki, i.e. AIk≈∏iaiki. Finally, the independent subcluster approximation is introduced by neglecting the interactions between different subclusters in the molecule or cluster. The total probability amplitude then reduces to a simple product of amplitudes for each subcluster, A≈∏IAI. Limitations of this simple approximation are discussed. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Polar Kerr rotation spectra of Fe-SiO2 granular films were measured at room temperature in the wavelength region between 400 nm and 850 nm. A maximum Kerr rotation angle (θk) of 18 min was obtained when a magnetic field of 10 kOe was applied perpendicular to the film plane. We have measured θk as a function of Fe volume fraction (fv) of the films. It was found that θk increases with increasing fv and peaks at fv≈0.4. We also found that θk decreases as the Fe particle size increases. Our results indicate that the density of Fe particles and the interfaces between Fe particles and SiO2 matrix may play an important role in the Kerr rotation of granular films. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A method to obtain the orientation distribution function (ODF) of a polycrystalline material directly from X-ray diffraction spectra is presented. It uses the maximum-texture-entropy assumption to reduce the diffraction data needed for the ODF analysis. The validity of this new method is illustrated through two model examples.

Notes: The orientation distribution function (ODF) of a polycrystalline material is usually constructed from individual orientations by the harmonic method on the assumption of a certain function distribution in the Euler space around each orientation. In the present paper, a new method is developed to determine the ODF from individual orientations. A natural partitioning of the orientation elements in the Euler space around some clustered orientations is proposed. Thus, the preliminary values of orientation density in the elements are directly estimated by the volumes of the orientation elements and the number of grains (or measured points) in each orientation element. Then, the texture vector is further refined using the maximum-entropy method with the preliminary orientation densities as constraints. The validity of this method is exemplified by the texture analysis of a cubic material from individual orientations modelled by Gaussian distribution.

Notes: Abstract. We propose a theoretical scheme to observe the loss of quantum coherence through the coupling of the superconducting charge qubit system to a nanomechanical resonator (NAMR), which has already been successfully fabricated in experiment and is convenient to manipulate. With a similar form to the usual cavity QED system, this qubit-NAMR composite system with engineered coupling exhibits the collapse and revival phenomenon in a progressive decoherence process. Corresponding to the two components of superposition of the two charge eigenstates, the state of the nanomechanical resonator evolves simultaneously towards two distinct quasi-classical states. Therefore the generalized “which way” detection by the NAMR induces the quantum decoherence of the charge qubit.

Notes: Abstract Differential cross sections and electron-photon angular correlation functions for electron impact excitation of hydrogen atoms in the energy range between then=3 andn=4 thresholds were calculated using the algebraic variational method. The cross sections and correlation functions show complicated and irregular structures associated with overlapping resonances in different partial waves. The availability of these quantities may help interested experimentalists to determine resonance positions, and also may furnish an important test of the adequacy of the computations.

Notes: The use of thin polymeric films in applications such as flexible circuit boards and dish membrane solar collectors has been gaining popularity. In these and many other applications the films are used under constant loading conditions which subjects them to long-term creep. In this paper, we present detailed experimental tensile creep results on unoriented films of varying crystallinities and unequal and equal biaxially oriented poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) films. The results indicate that the increasc of crystallinity, stretch ratios, and annealing causes reduction in longterm creep strains. Unequal biaxially stretched films exhibited in-plane anisotropy in their tensile creep behavior. In these films the lowest creep strains are observed in the direction along which the film stretched to the highest stretch ratio.

Notes: Poly(ethylene 2,6, naphthalene dicarboxilate), PEN, is very similar to poly(ethylene terephthalate), PET, in its chemical structure and was, therefore, expected to exhibit similar processing characteristics. We, however, observed a few problems during stretching of PEN, the most important of which was necking behavior at 145°C, which is between Tg (117°C) and Tcc (195°C). This is usually observed in PET only when it is stretched close to or below Tg. At temperatures between Tg and Tcc (cold crystallization temperature) PET stretches rather uniformly. The temperature window for film stretching appears to be rather wide, but our results indicate that this is not the case. Films stretched to high stretch ratios become uniform due to propagation and final disappearance of necks as a result of stress hardening. Our attempts at stretching these films at higher temperatures indicated that necking is eliminated, but so is stress induced crystallization, which causes stress hardening (unless high stretching rates are employed). The presence of stress hardening is essential for obtaining high quality, uniform films of these polymers. In addition, at high temperatures thermally activated crystallization which starts dominating the structure development, detrimentally affects the general appearance of the films. In brief, the PEN films we investigated have a narrower processing window than was anticipated based on their thermal behavior alone. At elevated temperatures the films are sensitive to the rate of stretching even more than typical PET processed at comparable conditions. The uniformity of the films depends on the stretch ratio, stretching mode, ratio(s) and rates and temperature. WAXS studies on the films indicate that the macromolecules packed into the low temperature crystal modification. In addition, WAXS pole figure studies suggest that naphthalene planes preferentially orient parallel to the film surface during biaxial stretching. The biaxially stretched films were observed to exhibit a bimodal chain orientation as evidenced by pole figure analysis of the (010) planes.
