Notes: Abstract The paper describes in detail the design, construction and use of apparatus used to determine respiratory deadspace with minimum patient co-operation. Results obtained after priming 39 volunteers are compared with results achieved by an automatic assessment on the same subject sample. A conclusion is reached that to quantify respiratory deadspace an automatic method must be used, if an accurate result is to be produced.
