Notizen: Abstract. Nitric oxide (NO.) is a small, diffusible free radical that is generated from L-arginine by a family of enzymes, collectively termed the nitric oxide synthases. We investigated the role of NO. in tendon healing. NO. synthase activity and immunoreactivity was absent in un-injured rat Achilles tendon. After surgical division there was a five-fold increase in NO. synthase activity and immunoreactivity within the healing tendon at day 7, with a return to near baseline levels at day 14. Inhibition of NO. synthase activity with oral administration of N〈omega〉-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) resulted in a significant reduction in cross-sectional area (30% at day 7, p 〈 0.01, 50% at day 15, p 〈 0.001) and failure load (24% at day 7, p 〈0.01) of the healing Achilles tendon constructs. Rats fed the same regimen of the enantiomer of L-NAME, (D-NAME) had normal tendon healing. These results indicate that nitric oxide synthase is induced during tendon healing and inhibition of nitric oxide synthase inhibits this tendon healing.

Notizen: Abstract The synthesis and characterization of siloxanes containing methacrylate, epoxy, and amino side chains are described. Direct hydrosilylation of unsaturated methacrylate or epoxy compounds with methyl hydrogen siloxanes resulted in the attachment of methacrylate or epoxy groups as side chains on the siloxane in good yields. Amino side chains on siloxanes were formed by acidic hydrolysis of the ketenimine side chains, obtained by hydrosilylation of unsaturated ketenimines with methyl hydrogen siloxanes. Details of the preparation and characterization of such unsaturated ketenimines are reported.

Notizen: Abstract European emissions of reduced nitrogen, arising principally from agriculture, are comparable with those of oxidised nitrogen from mobile and stationary combustion sources. It is therefore important to include ammonia emissions in working towards a new protocol on nitrogen under the programme of the UN Economic Commission for Europe on the control of transboundary air pollution. However the nature of the sources and the subsequent atmospheric transport and chemistry are very different from other acidifying pollutants. This paper describes work in hand under the MARACCAS project to compare agricultural activities in different European countries and to assess the applicability and efficacy of potential abatement measures. The aim is to derive abatement costs for each country relating successive emission reductions to the costs of achieving them, to be used by the UN ECE Task Force on Integrated Assessment Modelling (TFIAM) — in particular with our Abatement Strategies Assessment Model, ASAM. The paper will also address the large uncertainties involved in integrated assessment modelling with respect to ammonia, and suggest how these may be allowed for in deriving cost-effective abatement strategies.
