    Notes: Summary Transmission of nerve signals in the crayfish brain was studied by means of the transfer function derived from input-output analysis with random stimulation. The transfer function was measured in the form of frequency-response-function and represented by Bode plot. Two classes of the frequency-response-functions were discriminated, corresponding to two types of response patterns evoked by the constant frequency stimuli. The first type had the characteristics of a band pass filter similar to an underdamped resonant circuit. The second one had the characteristics of a phase lag circuit, occasionally, with additional small positive or negative peak at almost the same frequency as the resonance of the first type. A few possibilities for the resonance and the phase lag mechanisms were discussed.

    Notes: Due to the S passivation, a modified growth of Co on GaAs(001) has been found. Using reflection high-energy electron diffraction and transmission electron microscopy, we observed the formation of a hcp Co overlayer of approximately 5 nm thickness on S/GaAs(001). In contrast, a similar 5 nm Co film on GaAs(001) shows a bcc structure. The metal-semiconductor interfaces in both systems were found to be different, where Co/S/GaAs(001) showed a relatively more abrupt interface. This epitaxial modification is explained on the basis of the morphology of the initial substrate surface, chemical compositions, the nature of the chemical reaction between adatoms and substrate atoms, and the effect of atomic segregation. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We devised a screening method to obtain basidiomycetous fungi capable of degrading dioxins. About 200 fungal strains were selected from more than 1500 strains by their ability to decolorize Remazol brilliant blue R dye as an indicator. To attempt to eliminate the factor of dioxin sorption by mycelia, we prepared two series of living cultures exposed either long term or short term to 2,7-dichlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (2,7-DCDD), and compared the decreases in the levels of this chemical. In only 11 strains was there a significant difference between the two treatments. We chose Panellus stypticus strain 99-334 as a new, effective dioxin degrader, because it gave a close to 100% decrease in 2,7-DCDD levels (from an initial concentration of 10 μM) after 40 days of exposure. The detection of a metabolic intermediate (1-chloro-3,4-dihydroxybenzene) by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry analysis supported the ability of this strain to degrade 2,7-DCDD.

    Notes: Initial stages of InAs deposition on EuBa2Cu3O7−y (EBCO) thin-film superconductors with a SrF2 interlayer are investigated by using synchrotron-radiation photoelectron spectroscopy. Core-level and valence-band spectra can give imformation on both oxidation of InAs and reduction of the underlying EBCO with a very thin surface layer. These spectral evolutions demonstrate that SrF2 does not affect the underlying EBCO, and that the two-step growth procedure, comprising the initial InAs layer growth at room temperature and the top InAs layer growth at 200 °C, is effective in suppressing the interfacial redox reactions. Furthermore, cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy and x-ray-diffraction studies comfirm that SrF2 forms a uniform layer on the EBCO surface, and that the two-step growth process can crystallize an InAs top layer, which is highly (111) oriented with a full width at half-maximum of 0.25°.

    Notes: We have studied in detail the immunofluorescence localizations of Tetrahymena 14-nm filament-forming protein (49-kDa protein) in relation to tubulin in conjugating wild-type Tetrahymena thermophila (B strain) pairs and in pairs between B strain and star strains with defective micronuclei. The results suggest that germ nuclear behavior during conjugation may involve the following cytoskeletal structures: (1) during meiosis, microtubule structures are involved in micronuclear elongation and meiotic division; (2) at the postmeiotic stage, 49-kDa protein network structures that are formed independently of the existence of pronuclei are involved in the selection and the survival of one of four meiotic products; (3) during the third prezygotic division, gametic pronuclear transfer, and zygote formation, a cytoskeletal structure in which the 49-kDa protein colocalizes with microtubules and which is dependent on the existence of a normal gametic pronucleus is involved in gametic pronuclear behavior, and (4) during the postzygotic divisions, the microtubules are involved in nuclear behavior.

    Notes: This article describes a patient who died suddenly during Holter ECG monitoring. A ventricular premature systole with an extremely short coupling interval of 240 ms was immediately followed by torsades de pointes, soon degenerating into ventricular fibrillation. Retrospective survey of the patient's medical records revealed an incomplete right bundle branch block (iRBBB) configuration with fluctuating saddle back-type ST elevation in leads V1 and V2, these suggesting Brugada syndrome. Autopsy showed complete thrombotic occlusion of the left main coronary artery. (PACE 2003; 26:2175–2177)

    Notes: Spontaneous Ventricular Defibrillation. Ventricular fibrillation (VF) is one of the most life-threatening arrhythmias encountered in daily clinical practice. Its occurrence cannot be completely prevented by currently used antiarrhythmic drugs, and, in most instances, VF is sustained and leads lo the patient's death unless a successful DC defibrillation is applied. However, spontaneous reversion of VF to sinus rhythm has been observed in various animals and occasionally even in man. Hence, facilitation of self ventricular defibrillation must be explored as an alternative therapeutic approach. In experimental studies using several mammalian species, we have found that self ventricular defibrillation requires a good intercellular coupling and well synchronized electrical activity in the ventricles, which, in untreated animals, depend on their myocardial catecholamine content. It can then be hypothesized that any agent that elevates the catecholamine level during VF would facilitate spontaneous ventricular defibrillation, and drugs inhibiting extraneuronal catecholamine reuptake have indeed been shown to possess this ability. It is suggested that their effects are mediated by an increase in the intracellular cAMP level, and any compounds sharing this property could well prove efficacious in making VF transient and in reducing sudden cardiac death.
