Notes: The one-dimensional hydrogen atom treating the potential, –λ /||x||, is solved as a generalized function. The solutions (although nondegenerate) are nonunique unless fixed by some physical constraint. It is also shown that the hidden O(2) symmetry is a consequence of using solutions that are eigenfunctions of the operator sgn x≡x/||x||.

Notes: A compact expression for the calculation of phase shifts is derived for a potential which is the sum of local and nonlocal parts. Nonlocal potentials can support positive energy bound states, that is, states embedded in the continuous energy spectrum. These states, sometimes referred to as "isolated" states, are not associated with any poles of the S matrix. Some controversy exists in the literature on how such bound states are included in Levinson's theorem; it is found that the phase shift should be taken continuous at the energy of the bound state rather than taken to have a discontinuity of π. For simplicity, the analysis is restricted to the radial s wave Schrödinger equation and separable nonlocal potentials. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract A general strategy is advanced for simplifying nonlinear optimization problems, the “ant-lion” method. This approach exploits shape modifications of the cost-function hypersurface which distend basins surrounding low-lying minima (including global minima). By intertwining hypersurface deformations with steepest-descent displacements, the search is concentrated on a small relevant subset of all minima. Specific calculations demonstrating the value of this method are reported for the partitioning of two classes of irregular but nonrandom graphs, the “prime-factor” graphs and the “pi” graphs. We also indicate how this approach can be applied to the traveling salesman problem and to design layout optimization, and that it may be useful in combination with simulated annealing strategies.

Notes: Pulsed NMR T1, T2, and T1ρ measurements are reported for poly(vinylidine fluoride) (PVF2). The results demonstrate clearly the presence of four relaxation processes, three amorphous and one crystalline. The α relaxation is undoubtedly a crystalline one, while β and γ are both amorphous, in agreement with earlier conclusions from dielectric and dynamic mechanical measurements. The fourth relaxation (β′) observed initially in the mechanical measurements of Kakutani, but undetected in dielectric experiments, has been confirmed in our results and the process is described by an activation energy of 15.1 kcl/mole. Motion of folds on the surface of crystal lamellae is deemed to be the responsible mechanism for the β′ relaxation. Two models have been considered in the interpretation of the α process; rotation of crystalline chains in the vicinity of defects and rotational oscillation of restricted amplitude of all crystalline chains about the main chain axes. Rotation of amorphous chains is a possible mechanism for the γ process while motions of a general nature are responsible for the β relaxation. Our experimental results again indicate that spin diffusion plays an important role in the overall NMR response of the polymer.
