Hindered Rotation of the Carbonamide Bond in Crown Ethers, Cryptands, and Similar Systems - Electronic and Steric Substituent EffectsThe hindered rotation about the CO — N bond in a few cyclic cryptand systems is compared with that found in non-cyclic model compounds by means of 13C NMR spectroscopy at various temperatures. The ΔGc≠-values of the rotational barriers calculated for open-chained benzo- and iso-phthalomorpholides, piperidides, etc. are hardly different from that of the cyclic cryptand system 2. However, electron-pulling substituents in the para-position to the carboxamide group raise the rotational barrier by approx. 3 kJ/mol (0.7 kcal/mol) on the average, while electron-repelling substituents (even methyl group) lower it by approx. 2 kJ/mole (0.5 kcal/mole). The highest energy barriers are revealed by the 2,6-pyridinedicarboxamides 1, 8a-11 a and can be explained by the fact that the pyridino nucleus shows an exceptionally marked resonance with the neighbouring amide groups. Steric effects may be largely excluded; only in the 2-nitro substituted amide 9c a supplementary steric effect can be taken for granted.
Notes:
