Notes: Abstract The hexameric regulatory protein ArgR formed by arginine-mediated dimerization of identical trimers governs the expression of genes required for arginine metabolism and some other genes in mesophilic and moderately thermophilic bacteria. We have cloned the argR gene from two hyperthermophilic bacteria of the genus Thermotoga. The two-domain ArgR proteins encoded by T. neapolitana and T. maritima share a low degree of sequence similarity with other bacterial arginine repressors. The ArgR protein from T. neapolitana binds to an operator located just upstream of its coding sequence and, therefore, the argR gene may be autoregulated. The protein has extremely high intrinsic thermostability and tolerance to urea. Moreover, its binding to target DNA increases the melting temperature by approximately 15° C. The formation of oligomeric ArgR-DNA complexes is a function of protein concentration, with hexameric complexes being favoured at higher concentrations. In the presence of arginine the hyperthermophilic ArgR protein binds to its own operator, argRo, only by forming hexamer ArgR-DNA complexes, whereas both trimer-DNA and hexamer-DNA complexes are detected in the absence of arginine. However, the affinity of T. neapolitana ArgR for DNA has been found to be higher for a mixture of trimers and non-bound hexamers than for arginine-bound hexamers. Our data indicate that genes for arginine biosynthesis are clustered in a putative operon, which could also be regulated by the ArgR protein, in the hyperthermophilic host.

Notes: Summary Using the method of hot drawing developed earlier, an attempt has been made to obtain ultra-high modulus and ultrahigh strength PE filaments from original filaments produced by the “surface growth” technique. The average tensile strength of the drawn fibers reaches 5.5 GPa and the value of modulus measured in a dead loading creep experiment is estimated to be 44 GPa. 13 % of the drawn specimens had extremely high tensile strength close to theoretical estimates. The great scatter of the tensile strength data is attributed to the kink-band formation in the specimens due to their bending during preparation or during drawing.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Durch strömungsinduzierte Kristallisation wurden Fasern aus zwei kommerziellen linearen Polyethylenen (PE) unterschiedlichen Molekulargewichts dargestellt.

Notes: Abstract Fibers were produced from two commercial grade linear polyethylenes (PE) of different molecular weight by flow-induced crystallization. DSC measurements were carried out with an annealing and melting program lour melting peaks were found. The first peak, at the lowest temperature, can be identified with the melting of lamellar crystallized PE. Peak 2 corresponds to the melting of the main crystalline fraction of the fiber. and peaks 3 and 4 to the melting of constrained crystalline regions. The melting temperature depends on the molecular weight of the fiber material and on the drawing state.

Notes: Abstract The DSC-investigation of different concentrated sulphuric acid solutions shows that the results of this dynamic measurement method are in good agreement with those of steady state methods [1]. The diverse DSC-melting peaks can be interpreted by using the known behaviour of the system SO3/H2O [1] as the melting of different congruent melting phases or eutectics, respectively. The observed melting enthalpies are in the correct order.
