Notes: Quantitative measurements of the effect of a third phase of buoyant solid particles on the settling rates of suspensions of heavy particles are reported. It is found that for a wide range of concentration of both buoyant and heavy particles, the settling rates of both solid phases are greatly increased. If the phases are dilute, the settling velocities of both are retarded. The total settling time of heavy particles can be halved, but only under conditions that the light phase is unaccelerated. This suggests that small gas bubbles would form a more satisfactory buoyant phase. The high concentrations of thickened suspensions which result from the acceleration process are also reported.

Notes: A procedure using only fundamental physico-chemical data is developed for the design and analysis of packed columns used for solvent recovery in gas purification processes involving chemical reaction. The results of 173 experiments on the mass transfer performance of a pilot-scale regenerator stripping CO2 from loaded monoethanolamine solutions are reported and compared with model predictions. Anomolous responses of the overall mass transfer coefficient to changes in process conditions are observed and explained by the process model which is found to predict correctly both the magnitude of the coefficient and its response.

Notes: The quasi-steady behavior of a continuous flow reactor in which hydrogen peroxide is decomposed by immobilized catalase is investigated. Under certain conditions, reactors involving such substrate-inhibited, self-poisoning reactions are susceptible to suddne failure and the reactor moves catastrophically from high- to low-conversion quasi-steady states. This exchange-of-steady-states phenomenon is ex-amined in the light of experimental evidence for the enzyme catalase from bovine liver. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: The results of experiments in a fixed-bed reactor and a CSTR containing urease immobilized on a nonporous support and conducted in the absence of diffusional limitations are reported. Kinetic parameters were established by separate batch experiments. The key observation was that the product ammonia attacked the free form of the enzyme and thereby illustrates the importance of mechanism in determining deactivation kinetics.

Notes: When a mechanism is used to determine possible deactivation kinetics, a certain consistency with the kinetics of the main reaction is found. This result is examined in the light of experimental evidence obtained with bovine liver and Aspergillus catalases.
