    Notes: An atomic layer deposition–fluidized bed reactor (ALD–FBR) method has been developed to deposit ultrathin and conformal coatings on fine particles. Experiments of Al2O3 deposition on 150-μm-diameter nickel particles were conducted. The fluidized bed was constructed to operate under vacuum, and the fluidizing gas used was nitrogen. Trimethylaluminum and water were used as dosing reagents. The reactions were conducted at 450 K. Successful deposition of alumina films, with thickness controllable at the nanometer level, was observed based on transmission electron microscopy imaging, inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry, X-ray photoemission spectroscopy, particle-size distributions, and wavelength-dispersive spectrometry imaging.

    Notes: A one-dimensional nonisothermal model has been developed for the “rapid carbothermal reduction” synthesis of fine silicon carbide powders. Intrinsic reaction and self-diffusion kinetics are identified through simulation of the model and comparison to experimental results.     Notes: Carbothermally produced alpha-Si3N4 powder is thermally treated (1400°-1500°C for 4-12 h) in nitrogen-gas to determine the impact of thermal treatment on powder composition, particle size, morphology, and sinterability. Thermal treatment reduces residual carbon and oxygen content and reduces internal porosity (lower surface area), which results in a rounding of the particles. The lower oxygen content of the heat-treated, carbothermally produced alpha-Si3N4 powder allows Y2O3-Al2O3-SiO2 sintering formulation to be adjusted so that an improvement in the early stage of densification can be achieved.

    Notes: The carbothermal nitridation synthesis of α-Si3 N4is studied using electron microscopy techniques(FEG/SEM and TEM) and chemical composition analysis to characterize the reaction at various degrees of conversion. The reaction follows a nucleation-growth mechanism. Without “seed”α-Si3N4in the precursor, the reaction rate is controlled by the formation of nuclei which are associated with a Si-O-C intermediate phase. In the presence of “seed,” the limiting step is growth of α-Si3N4 onto the “seed” nuclei. Growth appears to follow a gas-phase route and is characterized by an irregular porous layer which grows onto the “seed.” The porous structure is the result of reaction around car-bon particles which are consumed during the process. The presence of admixed “seed” Si3N4in the precursor formu-lation increases the reaction rate since the nucleation step is eliminated. An activation energy of E = 457 ± 55 kJ/mol for the overall reaction closely approximates that previously reported for the formation of SiO. This result, along with the finding that residual crystalline SiO2 is present at all stages of the reaction, indicates that the overall reactionrate is controlled by the reduction of SiO2. Since reaction at the carbon and SiO2 contact points is fast, the rate-limiting step is most likely the gas-phase carbon reduction of SiO2with CO.

    Notes: Uniform submicron crystals of B4C, boron-enriched boron carbide, and B4C/TiB2 composite powders have been synthesized continuously by rapid carbothermal reduction at approximately 2,200 K in a 0.14 m ID × 1.68 m long pilot-scale graphite transport reactor. A unique reactor design allowed for continuous feeding of a meltable boron oxide containing precursor, rapid heating rates that completed the carbothermal reduction reaction in seconds, and an expanded cooling that allowed for the precipitation in space of volatile excess boron oxides. Powder morphology resembled that of powder synthesized by laser pyrolysis of gaseous reactants. Rapid heating rates and minimized reaction times at high temperatures promoted nucleation with limited crystal growth. Dense parts fabricated from these powders had fine grains and extreme hardness.
