Notes: Abstract. We have studied regulatory volume responses of cultured bovine corneal endothelial cells (CBCEC) using light scattering. We assessed the contributions of fluoxetine (Prozac) and bumetanide-sensitive membrane ion transport pathways to such responses by determining K+ efflux and influx. Cells swollen by a 20% hypo-osmotic solution underwent a regulatory volume decrease (RVD) response, which after 6 min restored relative cell volume by 98%. Fluoxetine inhibited RVD recovery; 20 μm by 26%, and 50 μm totally. Fluoxetine had a triphasic effect on K+ efflux; from 20 to 100 μm it inhibited efflux 2-fold, whereas at higher concentrations the efflux first increased to 1.5-fold above the control value, and then decreased again. Cells shrunk by a 20% hyperosmotic solution underwent a regulatory volume increase (RVI) which also after 6 min restored the cell volume by 99%. Fluoxetine inhibited RVI; 20 μm by 25%, and 50 μm completely. Bumetanide (1 μm) inhibited RVI by 43%. In a Cl−-free medium, fluoxetine (50–500 μm) progressively inhibited bumetanide-insensitive K+ influx. The inhibitions of RVI and K+ influx induced by fluoxetine 20 to 50 μm were similar to those induced by 1 μm bumetanide and by Cl−-free medium. A computer simulation suggests that fluoxetine can interact with the selectivity filter of K+ channels. The data suggest that CBCEC can mediate RVD and RVI in part through increases in K+ efflux and Na-K-2Cl cotransport (NKCC) activity. Interestingly, the data also suggest that fluoxetine at 20 to 50 μm inhibits NKCC, and at 100–1000 μm inhibits the Na+ pump. One possible explanation for these findings is that fluoxetine could interact with K+-selective sites in K+ channels, the NKC cotransporter and the Na+ pump.

Notes: The Ti6Al4V composites reinforced with Chinese SiC fiber was manufactured and thenthermally exposed at 800°C, 900°C and 1000°C, respectively, for up to 500h. The interfacial reactionproducts were identified as TiC between Ti6Al4V and the C-coating of the SiC fiber. However, if theSiC fiber has no C-coating, the interfacial reaction forms TiC, Ti3SiC2, Ti5Si3(Cx) and Ti3Si(Cx). Thethickness of the interfacial reaction zone was measured and it is found that the thickening rate isslower in the samples in which the SiC fiber has the C-coating. The growth of the interfacial reactionproducts is diffusion-controlled and the parameters of the growth kinetics, k0 and Q, were determined, respectively. The profile of the element distribution was calculated according to the diffusion theoryand is well consistent with the expeimental data

Notes: The formation of thin film ruby by the epitaxial growth of Cr-doped amorphous alumina on sapphire is described. The incorporation of Cr onto the Al cation sites has been found by ion channeling measurements. It is also confirmed by the observation of the R1 and R2 luminescence lines characteristic of ruby. The frequency of the R lines shift linearly with applied stress and the piezo-spectroscopic coefficient is the same as for bulk ruby. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The fluorescence from a thin ruby film, formed by epitaxial growth on a sapphire substrate, is shown to be a sensitive monitor of both the irradiation dose and the strain produced by irradiation of argon ions having an end of range exceeding the thickness of the ruby film. Decreases in fluorescence intensity are detectable for doses in excess of 1012 cm2, whereas no damage is detectable by Rutherford backscattering spectrometry/channeling until doses almost two orders of magnitude larger. Using the systematic shift in fluorescence frequency observed with irradiation, it is concluded that lattice strain accumulates rapidly for doses in excess of 1014 cm2. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A nondestructive, noncontact method of imaging resistance variations along electrical conductors is described. It is especially suitable for locating resistance variations in interconnect lines buried beneath layers of passivation. In its implementation, an intensity modulated laser beam is scanned over the circuit carrying a dc current and the voltage induced in the circuit at the modulation frequency is used to vary the intensity of a synchronously scanned display. Resistance variations, such as caused by defects, produce variations in the image thereby identifying their spatial location. Under certain circumstances, other features in the immediate vicinity of the conductors, such as remanent photoresist and decohered interfaces, can also be imaged. An advantage of the method is that the electrical circuitry in the device or package can be used.© 1998 American Institute of Physics.
