Notizen: Summary In the standard treatments for anisotropic shells based on the Kirchoff hypothesis, it is necessary to make certain restrictions on the type of anisotropy and the resulting theories involve only six elastic constants. In the present work, a shell theory is obtained by an “asymptotic” or “perturbation” method which does not require any restriction on the anisotropy. It is found that, in those cases in which the extensional and bending strains are of the same order of magnitude, the leading terms satisfy the classical equations and depend only on the same six elastic constants. It is seen however that in some cases the full anisotropy is significant and it is shown that in the extension of a plate the anisotropy can produce displacements normal to the plate.

Notizen: An efficient block overrelaxation algorithm is presented for the solution of the steady-state dam seepage problem. The formulation of Alt is used in conjunction with a finite element method on a fixed mesh to obtain a finite dimensional problem which is then solved by the algorithm. Some similarities of the formulation and the residual flow method of Desai are also discussed. Numerical results are compared with results of other authors.

Notizen: The current work uses Baiocchi's transformation to obtain heuristically a formulation of the inhomogeneous dam problem. When finite element methods are applied the finite dimensional problem is a variational inequality which may be solved to obtain approximate solutions. The main advantage of the method is that it uses a fixed mesh. The finite dimensional problem is solved by means of succesive overrelaxation with projection. Although the standard convergence theory1 for this method does not apply in this case, because the stiffness matrix is not symmetric, satisfactory and rapid convergence was obtained in all of our examples.Numerical results are given for some examples.

Notizen: The thermistor is an electrical device that can be used as a current surge protector. The basis of its operation is the temperature-dependent electrical conductivity that drops by 4 to 5 orders of magnitude over a temperature range of 100-200°C. In the present work the coupled heat and electrical current problems are examined with the conductivity modeled by a step function. A numerical scheme is suggested for the nonlinear coupled problem. Convergence of this scheme for some boundary conditions is demonstrated and some numerical results are given.
