Notizen: From examination of the ratios of strontium to calcium laid down as a lifetime record in the otoliths of sea trout Salmo trutta from Gotland, Baltic Sea, it was found that: (1) the shortest stream was used mostly by precociously emigrant or coastally hatched spawners; (2) longer streams had more fish that underwent normal smoltification; (3) sea-caught fish were predominantly coastally hatched (presumably near stream mouths). Furthermore, some otoliths showed no evidence of a freshwater history at all, raising the possibility of a contingent of the coastal population that does not depend on riverine spawning. The results emphasize the importance of the coastal zone as natal and early life habitat for sea trout in the Baltic, particularly with respect to a potential change to a warmer climate which may exacerbate conditions within small, ephemeral trout streams.

Notizen: Two populations of pike Esox lucius have been identified on the eastern coast of Sweden, in the Baltic Sea. These live together, but separate into two different populations during the spawning season. One is an obligate freshwater spawner and the other not only reproduces in ambient Baltic salinities, but appears not to enter fresh water at all.

Notizen: Abstract– Two almost eel-free lakes (339 and 299 ha respectively) in southeastern Sweden were stocked with French elvers in the autumn of 1980. The introduced eel stocks were monitored from the time of stocking and onwards using outlet traps equipped with fine-meshed screens and subsequently by test-fishing with long-lines and fyke-nets. Up to and including the spring run of 1994, more than 5,900 eels or about 2,600 kg were recaptured from one of the lakes, mostly as migrating silver eels. This means a recapture rate of about 11%. In the other lake most recaptures came from fyke-netting of the yellow eel stock. In this lake only 1.7% have been recaptured up to this point. These differences in yield and recapture rates from the two lakes are discussed in the context of lake productivity, growth rates, sex ratios, sizes of stocked elvers and size at silvering. In cconomic terms, the results from the higher-yielding lake indicate an excellent rate of profit. After approximately 10 years, the investment (cost of the introduced elvers) was paid back at a lending interest rate of 10%.

Notizen: Abstract Successful spawning of Baltic cod (Gadus morhua L.) is restricted to the deep basins of the Baltic Sea and is dependent on abiotic conditions such as salinity and water oxygen content. Due to irregular inflows of saline water from the North Sea, the conditions for spawning fluctuate and consequently so does the cod stock. In May and June 1990 eggs were obtained from spawning cod caught off northern Gotland, Sweden. Our investigation revealed neutral egg buoyancy for Baltic cod at a salinity of 14.4±1.1 ppt, with a slight decrease some days before hatching. Today salinities of this magnitude occur only in the Bornholm basin, whereas in the Gdansk and Gotland basins the eggs sink toward the bottom and are exposed to lethal oxygen conditions.

Notizen: Abstract The migration pattern of silver eel (Anguilla anguilla L.) in the Baltic is well documented from many tagging experiments. This particular investigation differed from previous taggings in that the background of all the eels used was the same. They came from a 1980 stocking programme and had been imported from France as glass eels. When migrating these stocked eels missed the outlet of the Baltic and continued in a south-westerly direction. They were still reported in this southern-most area more than 4 yr later. Indigenous eels turn northwards after passing the south of Sweden and leave the Baltic through the narrow Sound. Since the formerly stocked eels had never been in the Baltic, the absence of an imprinted olfaction cue may explain their orientation failure. Although lacking an imprinted olfaction cue eels were recaptured mainly in a very restricted area in the southwestern Baltic. This reflects another cue, genetic or imprinted during the Atlantic journey. This second cue, temperate, can also serve as the trigger which causes eels to stop migrating and to initiate spawning. The enclosed Baltic acts as a giant trap for eels from the huge stocking programmes undertaken there. As a consequence stocked eels probably contribute little to spawning stocks in the Sargasso Sea which may have contributed to the decrease in abundance of glass eels reported from western Europe in recent decades.

Notizen: Abstract Variation in cod stock strength in the Baltic Sea is considered to be dependent on abiotic conditions such as salinity and water oxygen content in the spawning areas (the Baltic deep basins). Spawning cod were caught off northern Gotland, Sweden, from April to June in 1989 and 1990. Our investigation revealed a reduction in spermatozoan motility and a subsequent reduction in the percentage of fertilized eggs in salinities of 10 to 12‰. Normal egg development required a minimum salinity of 11‰. This coincides with the osmolality of the seminal plasma and egg yolk; i.e., the Baltic cod is adapted to hyperosmotic conditions for spawning and is thus totally dependent on periodical inflows of saline water from the North Sea.
