Notes: Summary Colloidal silver (Collargol) was injected in the scala tympani of the cochlea. The animals survived for 2 to 5 hrs. The injected medium was found in both scales, in the cochlear aquaeduct (Fig. 1), in the subarachnoidal space along the external opening of the cochlear aquaeduct (Fig. 1), in the perineural tissue of the cochlear nerve in the modiolus (Fig. 2), in the spiral lamina (Fig. 4), habenula perforata and in the tympanal and vestibular portion of the spiral ligament (Fig. 3 and 5). Two communications between perilymph and liquor are discussed: from the scala tympani through the spiral osseus lamina into the modiolus and along the perineural tissue of the cochlear nerve to the subarachnoidal space, or through the cochlear aquaeduct directly into the subarachnoidal space. Our results are similar to those obtained in the same type of experiments on guinea pigs.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The capillaries of the spiral limbus in the cochlea of the laboratory rat were investigated under light and electron microscopy. A stereological examination of the capillary volumes of specimens injected with horseradish peroxidase was performed. The volume of capillaries amounted to 2.87%, and, as such, is very high. The ultrastructure of the capillaries showed continuous endothelial cells and basal laminae, discontinuous pericytes and varying relations towards the surrounding tissue. Morphological criteria, such as microvilli and plasmalemmal vesicles, suggest a significant transendothelial transport. The causes for the abundance of vessels in the spiral limbus are discussed: the transport of oxygen to the perilymph and the need of substances for the formation of the tectorial membrane seem to be important factors. The transport processes are obviously controlled by the endothelial cells as well as by the spiral limbus cells.

Notes: Summary Energy balance components over a grassland surface were compared to those obtained above an adjacent, uniform Scots pine plantation during a five-day period of fine, sunny, spring weather. Soils were judged to contain ample water. Shortwave and total radiation flux densities were measured at both sites with pyranometers and total pyrradiometers. Soil heat flux densities were measured with heat flux plates at both sites, and additional storage changes were estimated for air and canopy at the forest site. The forest gained more shortwave energy than the grassland during daytime because of its lower albedo, but it lost more longwave radiation at night. The turbulent fluxes of sensible and latent energy were evaluated with the Bowen ratio energy balance (BREB) method at both sites. Temperature and humidity gradients were measured with fixed psychrometers at the grassland site, and with interchanging psychrometers at the forest site. Mean daily evapotranspiration (ET) averaged 2.26 mm over the five days for the Scots pine, or only 57 percent of the 3.94 mm measured at the grassland site. The mean Bowen ratios were 2.6 and 0.8, respectively. An error analysis was carried out for the BREB estimates of latent heat flux at the two sites. For a given error in latent heat flux and at a specified Bowen ratio the demands on accuracy of dry- and wet-bulb temperature gradients above the rough forest canopy was found to be 10 times higher than above the smoother grassland. If additionally the observed differences in transpiration rates between the two sites were taken into account, the precision for temperature gradient measurements above the slowly transpiring forest becomes fortyfold greater than required above the rapidly transpiring grass. At present, BREB precision requirements for gradients above rougher, drier canopies appear achievable only through use of specialized instrumentation, such as measurement systems that incorporate interchangeable psychrometers into their design.

Notes: Summary After laryngopharyngectomy and reconstruction of the upper digestive tract, a free jejunal graft can be anastomosed in an isoperistaltic direction end-to-end to the trachea and the hypopharynx in order to form a shunt for vocal rehabilitation. Following placement of the shunt, no special care is required nor does any patient show any aspiration. Because of a low-flow resistance of the shunt, patients so treated possess long-lasting phonation with loud and modulated voices.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Das bedeutendste Konzept zur Wiederherstellung der Stimme nach Laryngektomie ist die tracheo-hypopharyngeale Shuntbildung.
Notes: Summary The fundamental concept in vocal rehabilitation after laryngectomy is the tracheo-hypopharyngeal shunt. The usual contemporary methods possess numerous disadvantages. In order to improve the results a syphon-fashioned shunt with free transplanted jejunum between the tracheal stump and the hypopharynx is created (stimulated by K. Ehrenberger). Aspiration can be avoided by means of the autonomic peristalsis of the implant. The procedure has been performed in 7 cases. One developed necrosis of the loop. The other patients posses a clear voice.
