Investigation of corrosion in the development of decontamination solutions for nuclear systems - Part IV: The corrosion behaviour of several iron and nickel base alloys in acid and alkaline complex forming, reducing solutions for post-decontamination treatmentFor decontaminating components of nuclear plants, the radionuclide-containing surface layers are frequently pre-treated with an oxidizing solution, and then removed with a reducing solution. In an acid post-treatment solution (sodium oxalate, triacetamine, di-ammonia citrate), the ferritic steel 21 CrMoV 5 11 shows relatively high corrosion rates, while austenitic steels and nickelchromium alloys are not corroded due to passivation. As an exception, Nimonic 80 A forms a metastable-passive system, but remains preferably active under galvanic corrosion conditions. In an alkaline solution (ethylene diamine, sodium di-phosphate, sodium oxalate, sodium thiocyanate, thiourea), the mild steel as well as the austenic steels and the nickel-chromium alloys investigated from metastable-passive systems. In solutions without thiocyanate and thiourea, and with an adequate oxygen content, the austenitic steels and the nickel-chromium alloys behave passively. In these alkaline solutions, however, the corrosion rates are very low, even when the materials remain in the active state.
Notes:
