    Notes: Abstract Monocytes play an essential role in cellular host defense as circulating phagocytes, as well as precursors of macrophages. We investigated the principal phagocytic activities in monocytes from cord blood of term infants by analysing adherence, random migration, chemotaxis, bactericidal activity, phagocytosis-associated chemiluminescence, production of superoxide anion (O 2 − ) and generation of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). All phagocytic functions of monocytes from neonates were shown quantitatively to be comparable to those of cells from healthy adult volunteers. The increased susceptibility of the human neonate to serious systemic infections cannot be related to an abnormality in monocyte function.

    Notes: Monazite grains from Greater Himalayan Sequence gneisses, Langtang valley, Nepal, were chemically mapped and then dated in situ via Th–Pb ion-microprobe analysis. Correlation of ages and chemistry reveals at least five different generations of monazite, ranging from c. 9 to 〉300 Ma. Petrological models of monazite chemistry provide a link between these generations and the thermal evolution of these rocks, yielding an age for the melting of Greater Himalayan rocks within the Main Central Thrust sheet (c. 16 Ma), and for the timing of thrust sheet emplacement that are younger than commonly viewed. Chemical characterization of monazite is vital prior to chronological microanalysis, and many ages previously reported for monazite from the Greater Himalayan Sequence are interpretationally ambiguous.

    Notes: In this article we describe the test of a zone plate monochromator for a laboratory soft x-ray source which is a laser produced plasma on a liquid jet target. The monochromator consists of a zone plate and a pinhole. Due to the special zone plate used (condensor zone plate KZP7) the monochromator is particularly suitable for laboratory sources since it collects a relatively large solid angle in the present setup. Depending upon the diameter of the pinhole a monochromaticity of up to λ/Δλ=600 can be achieved. The usefulness of the linear monochromator was proven on the basis of a filter transmission measurement. The monochromator can be used for several applications. In particular it is suitable for time-resolved x-ray absorption spectroscopy and pump and probe experiments. The use for such investigations is discussed. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract The biocompatibility of commercially pure titanium and its alloys is closely related to their surface properties, with both the composition of the protecting oxide film and the surface topography playing an important role. Surfaces of commercially pure titanium and of the two alloys Ti–6Al–7Nb and Ti–6Al–4V (wt %) have been investigated following three different pretreatments: polishing, nitric acid passivation and pickling in nitric acid–hydrogen fluoride. Nitric acid treatment is found to substantially reduce the concentration of surface contaminants present after polishing. The natural 4–6 nm thick oxide layer on commercially pure titanium is composed of titanium oxide in different oxidation states (TiO2, Ti2O3 and TiO), while for the alloys, aluminium and niobium or vanadium are additionally present in oxidized form (Al2O3, Nb2O5 or V-oxides). The concentrations of the alloying elements at the surface are shown to be strongly dependent on the pretreatment process. While pickling increases the surface roughness of both commercially pure titanium and the alloys, different mechanisms appear to be involved. In the case of commercially pure titanium, the dissolution rate depends on grain orientation, whereas in the case of the two alloys, selective α-phase dissolution and enrichment of the β-phase appears to occur. © 1999 Kluwer Academic Publishers

    Notes: Abstract Surface modification of acid-pretreated titanium with 3-aminopropyltriethoxylsilane (APTES) in dry toluene resulted in covalently bonded siloxane films with surface coverage that was relatively controllable by regulating the reaction conditions. A hetero-bifunctional cross-linker, N-succinimidyl-3-maleimidopropionate (SMP), reacted with the terminal amino groups, forming the exposed maleimide groups. Finally, a model cell-binding peptide, Arg–Gly–Asp–Cys (RGDC), was immobilized on the surface through covalent addition of the cysteine thiol groups to the maleimide groups. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, radiolabelling techniques, and ellipsometry were used to quantify and characterize the modified surfaces.

    Notes: Abstract In the present study, topographical characterization and microstructural interface analysis of vacuum-plasma-sprayed titanium and hydroxyapatite (HA) coatings on carbon fibre-reinforced polyetheretherketone (CF/PEEK) was performed. VPS-Ti coatings with high roughness values (Ra=28.29±3.07 μm, Rz=145.35±9.88 μm) were obtained. On this titanium, intermediate layer HA coatings of various thicknesses were produced. With increasing coating thickness, roughness values of the HA coatings decreased. A high increase of profile length ratio, Lr, of the VPS-Ti coatings (Lr=1.45) compared to the grit-blasted CF/PEEK substrate (Lr=1.08) was observed. Increasing the HA coating thickness resulted in a reduction of the Lr values similar to the roughness values. Fractal analysis of the obtained roughness profiles revealed that the VPS-Ti coatings showed the highest fractal dimension of D=1.34±0.02. Fractal dimension dropped to a value of 1.23–1.25 for all HA coatings. No physical deterioration of the CF/PEEK substrate was observed, indicating that substrate drying and the used VPS process parameter led to the desired coatings on the composite material. Cross-section analysis revealed a good interlocking between the titanium intermediate layer and the PEEK substrate. It is therefore assumed that this interlocking results in suitable mechanical adhesive strength. From the results obtained in this study it is concluded that VPS is a suitable method for manufacturing HA coatings on carbon fibre-reinforced PEEK implant materials.
