Notes: Manganese (Mn) deficiency is a major constraint of alkaline soils around the world, particularly for cultivation of durum wheat, which is more intolerant of low Mn levels than either common wheat or barley. Genetic variation for Mn efficiency exists in the current germplasm of durum wheat. Several restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLPs) previously shown to be linked to the Mel1 locus for Mn efficiency on chromosome 4HS of barley were tested on 88 selected F2 plants of the durum cross, ‘Stojocri 2’ (Mn efficient) בHazar’ (Mn inefficient). The Mel1-linked RFLP marker Xcdo583a was closely linked to the trait and explained over 42% of the total variation for Mn efficiency in the ‘Stojocri 2’/‘Hazar’ F2 progeny. This marker has the potential to provide a valuable tool for the marker-assisted selection of Mn-efficient durum progeny derived from crosses with ‘Stojocri 2’.

Notes: Abstract The effects of submonolayer deposits of titania on the hydrogenation of CO2, acetone, and CO on a Rh foil have been investigated. Titania has been found to promote all three of the hydrogenation reactions, with each reaction exhibiting a maximum rate at a titania coverage of 0.5 ML. The maximum rate for CO2 hydrogenation is 15 times that of the bare Rh surface. Acetone hydrogenation shows a 6-fold rate enhancement, while CO displays a 3-fold increase. Changes in the selectivities for each reaction are also observed upon titania promotion. The effects of titania on these reactions are attributed to an interaction between C-O bonds and Ti3+ ions located at the perimeter of titania islands.

Notes: Abstract Submonolayer deposits of titania on a Rh foil have been found to increase the rate of CO2 hydrogenation. The primary product, methane, exhibits a maximum rate at a TiO x coverage of 0.5 ML which is a factor of 15 higher than that over the clean Rh surface. The rate of ethane formation displays a maximum which is 70 times that over the unpromoted Rh foil; however, the selectivity for methane remains in excess of 99%. The apparent activation energy for methane formation and the dependence of the rate on H2 and CO2 partial pressure have been determined both for the bare Rh surface and the titania-promoted surface. These rate parameters show very small variations as titania is added to the Rh catalyst. The methanation of CO2 is proposed to start with the dissociation of CO2 into CO(a) and O(a), and then proceed through steps which are identical to those for the hydrogenation of CO. The increase in the rate of CO2 hydrogenation in the presence of titania is attributed to an interaction between the adsorbed CO, released by CO2 dissociation, and Ti3+ ions located at the edge of TiO x islands covering the surface. Differences in the effects of titania promotion on the methanation of CO2 and CO are discussed in terms of the mechanisms that have been proposed for these two reactions.

Notes: Abstract The effects of submonolayer deposits of titania on the hydrogenation of ethylene and the hydrogenolysis of ethane on a Rh foil have been investigated. Titania has been found to suppress the activity of Rh for both reactions, and the rate of each reaction is proportional to the exposed Rh area. Titania induces no change in the activation energy of either reaction. Furthermore, high temperature reduction in H2 does not change the activation energy for ethane hydrogenolysis on a titania-covered Rh foil. It appears that the titania overlayer has no effect on the activation of H2, ethylene, or ethane, and that the suppression of activity for these reactions is purely the result of titania blocking active sites.

Notes: Abstract The effects of submonolayer deposits of titania on the activity and selectivity of a Rh foil catalyst for C2H4/CO/H2 reactions have been investigated. Reactions were carried out at 1 atm total pressure and at temperature of 488 K and 523 K. The addition of titania to the catalyst enhances the total rate of C3-oxygenate formation. This rate enhancement is due entirely to an increase in the rate of 1-propanol formation, which reaches a maximum at a TiO x . coverage of 0.2 ML. The rate of propanal formation, by contrast, is not enhanced. The rates of formation of methane, ethane, and C3-hydrocarbons also exhibit rate maxima at a TiO x . coverage of 0.2 ML. The rates of formation of C4- and C5-hydrocarbons, on the other hand, are suppressed by titania addition. The higher rate of 1-propanol production in the presence of titania is attributed to an interaction between Ti3+ ions at the edge of TiO x . islands and the carbonyl bond of adsorbed C3-oxygenated species. Such interactions are envisioned to facilitate hydrogenation of the carbonyl bond.

Notes: Summary Ceftazidime was used as monotherapy for 30 febrile episodes in 28 patients, who underwent allogeneic bone marrow transplantation and who were treated concomitantly with the immunosuppressive agent cyclosporin-A. Ceftazidime did not enhance the well established nephrotoxicity of cyclosporin-A as measured by serum creatinine levels or creatinine clearnace. Although an increasing number of Gram-positive infections in these patients warrants vigilance, ceftazidime as initial empirical monotherapy proved to be successful in 95% of all febrile post-transplantation patients. All Gram-negative and 69% of the Grampositive infections were cured with ceftazidime alone. The overall clinical cure rate was 72%, with microbiological clearance in 63%. This compares favourably with aminoglycoside containing schedules and avoids the aminoglycoside associated nephrotoxicity.

Notes: Abstract Eucalyptus tenuiramis frequently forms mixed-species stands with E. obliqua. A statistical analysis of 2140 forest stands in south-eastern Tasmania indicates that the mixed-species stands of E. tenuiramis and E. obliqua occupy and environmental space intermediate to that of pure stands of either species. Detailed examination of one such mixed-species stand showed that local-scale variation in soil depth could make the environment similar to that of pure stands and that this soil depth variation was correlated with the abundance of each species in the local area. Examination of another mixed-species stand over the first 15 years of development demonstrated that local-scale variation in soil depth did not affect the probability of establishment of either species. However, within 2 or 3 years of establishment plants were large enough to explore the full soil volume and soil depth became a significant factor in species performance. Logistic regression modelling indicated that threshold values of drought stress for species changeover at the broad geographical scale, due to variation in mean annual climate, were the same as those correlated with local-scale patches of species that occurred as a result of variations in soil depth. Finally, the photosynthetic performance and leaf-area production of plants in mixed-species plantings and monoculture across artificially induced gradients of water supply were examined. Differences in species response to drought-stress provided a physiological explanation of the growth performance of each species at different levels of resource supply.

Notes: Abstract The cereal cyst nematode (CCN) (Heterodera avenae Woll.) is an economically damaging pest of wheat in many of the worlds cereal growing areas. The development of CCN-resistant cultivars may be accelerated by the use of molecular markers. The Cre gene of the wheat line “AUS 10894” confers resistance to CCN. Using a pair of near-isogenic lines (NILs) that should differ only in a small chromosome segment containing the Cre locus, we screened 58 group-2 probes and found two (Tag605 and CDO588) that detect polymorphism between the NILs. Nulli-tetrasomic and ditelosomic lines confirmed that the restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) markers identified were derived from the long arm of wheat chromosome 2. Crosses between “AUS 10894” and “Spear” and the NIL “AP” and its recurrent parent “Prins” were used to produce F2 populations that gave the expected 3∶1 segregation ratio for the resistance gene. Linkage analysis identified two RFLP markers flanking the resistance gene. Xglk605 and Xcdo588 mapped 7.3 cM (LOD=6.0) and 8.4 cM (LOD=6.7), respectively, from the Cre locus.
