Notes: The activity of succinic dehydrogenase of post-rigor bovine tissue was determined at various temperatures and pH values. The oxygen uptake thus measured yielded typical curves. In the first 15 hr the uniform gas uptake can be accounted for by oxygenation of myoglobin, solution of oxygen and nitrogen, and enzymatic oxygen uptake. After 15 hr the oxygen uptake is due to enzymatic reaction. The enzymatic uptake of oxygen is about 0.7 μL/hr/g of wet tissue. The evolution of carbon dioxide was about 1.1 μL/hr/g of wet tissue. Tissue sample taken from deep in the musculature, however, showed a larger carbon dioxide evolution in the first 4 hr of exposure (before equilbrium is established) to au air atmosphere.

Notes: Summary This paper reports the results of a two-year field study at Logan, Utah which was one of a series of similar experiments carried out at Ft. Collins, Colorado, Davis, California and Yuma, Arizona. A range of water application rates were imposed using the line-source system (Hanks et al., 1976) and in some treatments water was withheld during certain growth stages. Salinity variables were imposed by presalinization before planting and by the use of saline irrigation water. Regardless of irrigation or salinity regime, corn grain and total dry matter production were linearly related to evapotranspiration, which was measured as the sum of irrigation, rainfall and soil water depletion minus drainage. Presalinization of the soil decreased yields in proportion to the salinity imposed, the decrease being associated with reductions in evapotranspiration caused by reduced soil water depletion as compared to the nonsalinized treatments.

Notes: Abstract Four different methods of assessing cell proliferation in renal cell carcinoma were compared in a total of 136 samples to analyze their degree of agreement and usefulness. The methods compared were flow cytometric S-phase (S-FCM) analysis, proliferating cell nuclear antigen expression detected by immunohistochemistry (PCNA-IHC), in vivo iododeoxyuridine incorporation analyzed with immunohistochemistry (IdUrd-IHC), and flow cytometry (IdUrd-FCM). The mean S-FCM fraction was 5.9%, compared with a mean PCNA-IHC labeling index of 4.7%. The mean labeling indices obtained by IdUrd-IHC and IdUrd-FCM were 1.2% and 1.7% respectively. The four methods correlated well with each other. When the methods were compared according to Bland and Altman, good agreement was shown. A statistically significant difference in proliferation between diploid and aneuploid tumor samples was found with all methods (P〈0.001). The results showed that the four different methods provided comparable information on proliferative activity, although different cell cycle compartments were monitored.
