    Notes: Salinity aggravates B toxicity symptoms in several plant species. In the present study the interactive effects of B toxicity and salinity stresses on the subcellular distribution of boron, cations and proteins in basal and apical leaf sections of wheat were investigated. High B supply increased total B concentrations in all leaf parts, but values remained below 25 mg B kg−1 dry weight (DW) in basal sections, whereas they reached more than 600 mg B kg−1 DW in leaf tips. In basal leaf sections intercellular soluble B concentrations closely reflected the external supply, whereas intracellular soluble B concentrations remained lower by a factor of two, indicating some retention of excess B in the apoplast. Combined salinity and B toxicity stresses significantly increased soluble B concentrations in inter- and intracellular compartments of basal leaf sections in comparison with either stress alone, probably related to salinity-induced changes in water status. The combined stresses also induced quantitative and qualitative changes in inter-, but not intracellular protein composition. Most obvious was the induction of a 25 kDa protein and an increase in amount of a 33 kDa protein. It is suggested that these changes might be due to structural modifications of the cell wall. The concentration of soluble boron in cells is proposed to be an indicator of boron toxicity.

    Notes: Abstract A ‘one bottle’ method to determine particulate debris of titanium and zirconium in blood serum was developed. Inductively coupled plasma – optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) was used to simultaneously detect both elements at concentrations above 50 ng/mL. Pressurized digestion by means of nitric and hydrofluoric acid in PTFETM-containers in a specific time-heat-pressure protocol apparatus was applied to assure complete solvation of particles including oxides. Total decomposition of the matrix was achieved and reasonable detection limits were accomplished. The amount of remaining carbon did not cause any matrix problems during measurement.

    Notes: Abstract A technique for the determination of titanium and zirconium in human blood serum, after pressurized digestion utilizing ICP-MS coupled to an ultrasonic nebulizer (USN) and desolvating membrane is described. As no CRM for titanium is available, zirconium has been determined in order to demonstrate the accuracy of the technique, as the limits in blood are well known. Bone cement consists basically of a polymer, namely polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA). For better X-ray contrast some manufacturers use incorporated ZrO2 with a volume fraction of 10 to 15%. Thus, the zirconium present in the PMMA matrix can be used as an indicator for the PMMA particulate debris.

    Notes: Abstract Different direct molded ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) samples have been investigated using reflective light microscopy and scanning electron microscope techniques (low voltage and variable pressure SEM). On the surfaces as well as throughout the material a—to the best of our knowledge—unknown type of impurities has been identified. X-ray element analysis (EDX) was used to characterise these impurities as sodium chloride and potassium chloride salt inclusions.
