Notes: This article is a study of the musical style of Randy Newman, one of the most intriguing singer–songwriters in the United States today. Since Newman's is hardly a household name, let me begin with a biographical note. Born in New Orleans in 1943, Randy Newman moved to Southern California at the age of five and has lived there ever since. While still a teenager he became staff songwriter for a small publishing company, and in 1966 achieved his first commercial success with a song recorded by Judy Collins, ‘I Think It's Going To Rain Today’. He began recording for Warner Brothers/Reprise in 1968, and has released an album every two or three years since then. Except for one hit, ‘Short People’ (1977), his music has appealed to a relatively small but devoted following. Unlike many contemporary songwriters, Newman is classically trained, and is a skilled orchestrator who writes his own arrangements, as well as arrangements for other artists and occasional film scores.

Notes: Anterior-posterior and lateral skull roentgenograms of 1,044 children aged 0–18 yr were examined for pineal gland calcification. Eighty children with pineal calcification were identified. Cranial computed tomograms (CCT) existing for half of the 80 cases provided confirmation. In contrast to existing reports on pineal calcification in the first decade of life, we found a significant percentage of “physiological” calcification even between 0 and 6 yr of age (range 2.9–4.2%). Contrary to current opinion we were not able to detect any signs of pineal gland tumors in these cases. We were able to confirm other reports which note a steep rise of the incidence of pineal calcification during the second decade of life.

    Notes: Abstract We prove that the number oft-wise balanced designs of ordern is asymptotically $$n\left( {(_t^n )/(t + 1)} \right)(1 + o(1))$$ , provided that blocks of sizet are permitted. In the process, we prove that the number oft-profiles (multisets of block sizes) is bounded below by $$\exp \left( {c_1 = \sqrt n \log n} \right)$$ and above by $$\exp \left( {c_2 = \sqrt n \log n} \right)$$ for constants c2〉c1〉0.

Notes: Abstract For a hypergraphH, we denote by (i) τ(H) the minimumk such that some set ofk vertices meets all the edges, (ii) ν(H) the maximumk such that somek edges are pairwise disjoint, and (iii) λ(H) the maximumk≥2 such that the incidence matrix ofH has as a submatrix the transpose of the incidence matrix of the complete graphK k . We show that τ(H) is bounded above by a function of ν(H) and λ(H), and indeed that if λ(H) is bounded by a constant then τ(H) is at most a polynomial function of ν(H).

Notes: Abstract We show that the regular part of a variety of algebras may not consist entirely of subalgebras of Plonka sums; indeed, the latter may not be closed under homomorphic images. In addition we give an example of a finitely based variety whose regular part has no finite basis (but is finitely based in a different similarity type). Our examples contrast with known results for semigroups, and contradict a published claim for the general case.

Notes: Abstract.  Childhood hydronephrosis (HN) is accurately detected by ultrasound (US), but its functional work-up remains a domain of scintigraphy, the Whitaker-test, and clinical follow-up. We utilized color doppler US (CD-Jet) of uretero-vesical jets (UVJ) to visualize the postobstructive ureteral flow in childhood HN. A total of 177 standardized CD-Jet were performed in 132 children aged 1 day to 14.9 years. Sixty-nine investigations in 43 patients with unilateral HN were compared with a standardized technetium 99m-mercaptotriacetylglycine nephrogram; in 10 infants both procedures were performed consecutively on the same day. UVJ were visible in 96% of all investigations. Ureteral obstruction resulted in absence of UVJ in 85% of examinations; in the remaining 15% the jet frequency was less than 10% observed in the contralateral control. Results are highly significant in both uretero-pelvic (P〈0.00007) and uretero-vesical lesions (P〈0.00005, Wilcoxon test) and are reproducible in sequential investigations. In nonobstructive distal HN the jet frequency averaged 70% of the unaffected side (P〈0.05). In proximal lesions it is equal. Jet evaluation in reflux nephropathy did not differ from controls. Compared with scintigraphy, CD-US identifies obstruction with a specificity of 94.2% and sensitivity of 94.8%. CD-US of UVJ therefore may serve as a reliable screening parameter in unilateral childhood HN.

Notes: Summary Letn random intervalsI 1, ...,I n be chosen by selecting endpoints independently from the uniform distribution on [0.1]. Apacking is a pairwise disjoint subset of the intervals; itswasted space is the Lebesgue measure of the points of [0,1] not covered by the packing. In any set of intervals the packing with least wasted space is computationally easy to find; but its expected wasted space in the random case is not obvious. We show that with high probability for largen, this “best” packing has wasted space $$O(\frac{{\log ^2 n}}{n})$$ . It turns out that if the endpoints 0 and 1 are identified, so that the problem is now one of packing random arcs in a unit-circumference circle, then optimal wasted space is reduced toO(1/n). Interestingly, there is a striking difference between thesizes of the best packings: about logn intervals in the unit interval case, but usually only one or two arcs in the circle case.

Notes: Abstract Energies and widths of severalS andP type resonance ine-H scattering are determined in a calculation involving only square-integrable functions of the integral transform type obtained by the generator coordinate method. Several resonances are apparently calculated for the first time. Advantages and disadvantages of the coordinate-rotation method are critically examined and discussed. A restricted perturbation scheme for the calculation of resonances is proposed and applied to the first1S resonance of the He+ —e system.
