Notes: We investigate the impact of the deposition of low work function metals such as calcium on thin layers of fluorene-type polymers by time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectroscopy. An implantation process rather than a slow metal diffusion is found to be the most probable source of metal contamination within the polymer layers. This contamination extends to a range of several tens of nanometers in the organic layers. Photoluminescence and electroluminescence measurements are performed with varying calcium layer thicknesses. The luminescence efficiency exhibits a strong correlation with the depth profile of the calcium present within the polymer. The results are discussed with respect to the exciton diffusion length in the fluorene polymer. A numerical model including exciton formation, migration, and quenching is proposed in order to describe the observed phenomena. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Electrical homogeneity is an essential requirement for semi-insulating (SI)InP:Fe wafers. A method is presented to measure the spatial distribution of resistivity at room temperature via the photorefractive effect. The experimental conditions are presented and discussed. The potential of the method is demonstrated by applying it to SI liquid encapsulated Czochralski grown material. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Summary We report the case of a 43-year-old woman who had a cardiogenic shock due to an acute inferior myocardial infarction. Her husband and a general practitioner living in the neighborhood initially performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation. A prehospital emergency physician found ventricular fibrillation when he arrived after 20 minutes. It was impossible to achieve stable rhythm by 42 attemps of defibrillation. Therefore, the patient was carried to our clinic under ongoing cardiopulmonary resuscitation. A cardiologist was informed with radio signal. Percutaneous cardiopulmonary support (pCPS) was implanted in the emergency department after 100 minutes of cardiac arrest. After stabilizing the hemodynamic situation by pCPS (4–5 l/min) it was possible to transfer the patient to the catheterization laboratory. Angiography revealed proximal occlusion of a dominant right coronary artery. After successful angioplasty it was possible to reestablish stable sinus rhythm by single defibrillation. By use of intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) the flow rate of pCPS was reduced every two hours. After 10 hours of support pCPS was explaned. IABP was needed for three days. The patient was discharged from hospital without any relevant neurological deficits after nine weeks. By using pCPS it is possible to stabilize the patient's hemodynamic situation and to perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures if other means of resuscitation do not suffice. The use of pCPS in resuscitation is indicated in circulatory arrest if further therapeutic options seem promising.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) virus could be coupled to sheep red cells by means of CrCl3. These sensitized erythrocytes were passivly agglutinated when incubated with virus-specific antisera, and the addition of guinea pig complement caused hemolysis of them. The intensity of these two reactions strongly depended on the type of antiserum used. While guinea pig hyperimmune serum was most suitable for PIH, swine hyperimmune serum could only be used for PHA. Both of these reactions were influenced by the conditions present during the coupling procedure. To avoid the spontaneous hemolytic action of CrCl3 a total protein content of 0.66 mg/ml of the antigen solution used was necessary. If this protein quantity was not available in the virus antigen preparation, this had to be corrected by the addition of suitable amounts of bovine serum albumin (BSA). The virus-specific as well as the non-specific hemolytic properties of the sensitized red cells increased with the rise in the coupling temperature. The most satisfactory results were obtained if the coupling procedure was performed at a temperature of 23° C. Under such optimal conditions the intensity of PIH increased proportionally with the amount of virus specific antigen coupled to the erythrocytes. But if the amount of nonviral protein was increased by the addition of BSA in such a way that the amount of total protein exceeded 1 mg per ml antigen solution, an inhibition of the PIH was observed, which increased parallelly with the rise in nonviral protein concentration. The PIH test has proved to be highly specific for the differentiation of FMD virus types. The PAH test was not tested in this respect.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary From a modified foot-and-mouth disease virus strain containing about one swine infectious unit per 107.7 TCD50 no completely avirulent line could be isolated after 5 plaque passages. The plaque line had the same rct markers and the same virulence for mice as the original virus. When the original virus was passaged five times over limiting infective dilutions, the resulting end dilution line was apparently avirulent for swine. It also differed in its rct37 markers- and in a diminished virulence for mice as compared with the original virus. It was attempted to elucidate the reasons for the failure to clone by the plaque method. The results show that virus aggregates are possibly involved in plaque formation. Under certain conditions, however, these aggregates should not play any role in the isolation of pure virus lines. Also secondary plaque contamination by non-cytopathogenic or non-plaque-forming virus particles, by nonadsorbed or eluted particles as well as agar-sensitive particles should be of no significance. Probably reverse mutations are responsible for the failure of the plaque method. The reappearance of a certain degree of virulence in the end dilution line on the course of a few subsequent ordinary passages supports this assumption.
