Phenalenium Ions, II1). The 1-Ethoxyphenalenium Ion as Ambident CationNumerous C-nucleophiles attack the 1-ethoxyphenalenium ion (1a) at the 3-position. Hydride ion elimination results in the formation of 3-ethoxyphenafulvenes of type 2, which, in some cases (e. g. 9 and 10), show cyanine character. Anilines substitute 1a in the 1- and 3-positions to give either 23 or 24 depending on the nature of the p-substituents. The unusual sensitivity of the position of substitution towards slight structural changes was proved to be a real effect by reaction of 5-methyl-1-ethoxyphenalenium ion (30b). A plausible mechanism is suggested. The reactivity of 1a is estimated from HMO calculations.

Zahlreiche C-Nucleophile greifen das 1-Äthoxy-phenalenium-Ion (1a) in 3-Stellung an. Unter Hydrid-Abspaltung entstehen 3-Äthoxy-phenafulvene vom Typ 2, die teilweise (z. B. 9, 10) Cyanin-Charakter besitzen. Aniline substituieren 1a in Abhängigkeit vom p-Substituenten in 1- und 3-Stellung zu 23 oder 24. Durch Einsatz des 5-Methyl-1-äthoxy-phenalenium-Ions (30b) wird bewiesen, daß diese ungewöhnliche Empfindlichkeit des Substitutionsortes gegen geringe Strukturänderungen real ist. Es wird ein plausibler Chemismus vorgeschlagen. Die Reaktivität von 1a wird aus HMO-Berechnungen abgeschätzt.
