Notes: Summary BD IX rats were trained to avoid a black and white compartment which was associated with gentling. The rats were given 12 acquisition sessions in which they were stroked if they remained in the critical compartment at the end of the fifteen 20-sec intervals during the 5-min test period. The results indicated that the negative reinforcing effects of gentling were a function of the early handling history and sex of the rat.

Notes: Abstract Tactile sensilla of the trochanteral hair plate in the coxotrochanteral joint of the cockroach leg were stimulated by random (white noise) displacement and the afferent action potentials resulting from the stimulation were observed. From the resulting signals, the first and second order frequency response functions between the stimulus and the response were computed, together with their inverse Fourier transforms, the time domain Wiener kernels. Analysis of these results shows that the behaviour of the receptor may be minimally accounted for by a cascade of two functional elements, where the first is a linear element affected by the past history of the input signal (memory) and the second is a nonlinear element with no memory. The behaviour of the linear element is very close to that of a time differentiator or velocity detector, while the nonlinear element behaves as a rectifier which transmits the velocity signal only during flexion of the limb. The results suggest that the functional description may correspond to a physical system with two parts. The element performing differentiation is probably a fluid cavity in the mechanical connection from the hair to the dendrite, and the element performing rectification is most likely to be found in the cell membrane of the dendrite.

Notes: Summary Cajal (1911) noted that bistratified amacrine cells were common in non mammalian species and extremely rare in the mammalian retina. An examination of the marsupial retina of the tammar wallaby, stained with a modified Golgi procedure, revealed that a particular type of bistratified amacrine was frequently impregnated with the silver stain. Flat mount and transverse sections showed that the morphology of this cell did not correspond with any of the species-dependent bistratified amacrines reproduced in Cajal's drawings. Instead, the cell appeared to be almost identical to the AII or rod amacrine that has been observed in a number of mammalian retinas. The relative frequency with which the cell appears in our material, and its confirmed rod input in other species, are both consistent with the grazing habits of the tammar wallaby which is a crepuscular animal that does most of its feeding at dusk and after dark.

Notes: Summary Quadrature formulas are obtained for the Fourier and Bessel transforms which correspond to the well-known Gauss-Laguerre formula for the Laplace transform. These formulas provide effective asymptotic approximations, complete with error bounds. Comparison is also made between the quadrature formulas and the asymptotic expansions of these transforms.

Notes: Objective To assess whether colour Doppler sonography can replace pelvic arteriography in the assessment of patients with gestational trophoblastic disease.Design An observational study in which patients with gestational trophoblastic disease were assessed with both pelvic arteriography and colour Doppler sonography.Setting The oncology unit of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, University of Hong Kong. The unit is the main tertiary referral centre for treatment of trophoblastic diseases in Hong Kong.Subjects Thirty-two consecutive women referred over an 18 month period.Main outcome measures The site of localisation of the tumour and the size of the tumour as assessed by both methods. Results Eleven patients had a spontaneous fall of β-hCGtitres and did not have pelvic arteriograms performed. The remaining 21 patients had both investigations performed. Four patients had no evidence of abnormal pelvic vessels either on colour Doppler sonography or on pelvic arteriography. Their raised P hCG titres were due to metastatic disease elsewhere. In the remaining patients the location of the tumour vessels was found to be concordant between the two methods of imaging. Measurements of the mean diameter of tumour bulk by the two methods also agreed well (r = 0.93, P 〈 0–0001). Pelvic arteriogram over-estimated the size of the tumour in two patients by 2 and 3 cm, respectively, but this did not alter the risk categories of the patients. Conclusion Colour Doppler sonography is a noninvasive technique that can replace pelvic arteriography in the assessment of patients with trophoblastic diseases.

Notes: Fresh cooked ginger and processed ginger products were extracted with methanol and analyzed by HPLC to study changes in the levels of [6]-, [8]-, and [10]-gingerols after the products had been cooked and processed, and during storage of the products. Sensory tests evaluated the intensity of pungency in different processed products. Cooking and processing of paste and scnbei decreased (p 〈inlineGraphic alt="leqslant R: less-than-or-eq, slant" extraInfo="nonStandardEntity" href="urn:x-wiley:00221147:JFDS1338:les" location="les.gif"/〉 0.05) gingerol levels, but blanching and freeze-drying had no effect. Gingerols in all products degraded gradually with storage. Ginger powder had a lower degradation rate than the paste stored at 4°C. Likewise, ginger senbei was more stable than ginger powder stored at room temperature (≅ 23°C).
