Notes: A series of new intramolecular charge transfer compounds with absorption bands in shorter wavelengths have been synthesized. Bright visible light emits from the crystals of these new compounds under infrared pulsed laser pumping. The spectral and pump density dependent properties demonstrate that some of the emissions are up-conversion fluorescence due to two photon absorption. The fluorescent yields of one- and two-photon absorption are in the same order at high pump density. This work demonstrates that these new intramolecular charge transfer crystals are good candidates for nonlinear optical materials. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract The oxidation resistance of Ti–50Al intermetallics is improved bypreoxidation for 1, 4, or 16 hours in high-pressure, pure oxygen(≈3.9 atm) at 900°C. Specimens preoxidized for 1 hr exhibit betteroxidation resistance than others. Prolonged preoxidation time candeteriorate the oxidation resistance and reduce the parabolic-lineartransition time during subsequent cyclic oxidation in 800°C air. Theoxide-mound occurrence is an important factor for evaluating theeffectiveness of the preoxidation treatment in oxygen. The formationmechanism of Z-phase (Ti5Al3O2) in the Al-depleted layer beneath theflat oxide scale and that beneath the oxide mound are also proposed inthis study.

Notes: In this paper we present a machine vision system for the automatic inspection of defects in textured surfaces found in industry. The defects to be inspected are those that appear as local anomalies embedded in a homogeneous texture. The proposed method is based on a Gabor filtering scheme that computes the output response of energy from the convolution of a textured image with a specific Gabor filter. The best parameters of a Gabor filter are selected so that the energy of the homogeneous texture is zero, and any unpredictable defeats will generate significantly large energy values. A simple thresholding scheme then follows to discriminate between homogeneous regions and defective regions in the filtered image. This transforms texture differences into detectable filter output. The experiments on structural textures such as leather and sandpaper have shown the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Notes: Summary It has been found that β-dicarbonyl compounds such as 1-phenyl-butane-1,3-dione(benzoyl-acetone)and 4,4,4-trifluoro-phenylbutane-1,3-dione (benzoyl-trifluoroacetone) can effectively photostabilize photodegradation of polyisoprene in solutions containing protonic solvents (alcohols). The photostabilization mechanism is due to the photo-enolization reaction, during which absorbed UV radiation is consumed for the proceeding of this reaction. The photostabilization of formulations containing alcohol by β-dicarbonyl compounds, has potential application in the protection of cosmetics against photoageing reaction.

Notes: Summary The photophysical behavior of a novel monomer, p-dimethylaminobenzylmeth-acrylate (DMABMA), which can self-Initiate, polymerize and copolymerize was investigated. Results demonstrated that the exciplex which was formed between amino group and double bond in the same molecule was present during photoinitiation.

Notes: Abstract Analytical electron microscopy has been used to study a new phase found in a Ti50 Pd50 alloy. The new phase was formed as ellipsoidal particles along the grain boundaries of the martensitic matrix. The crystal structure was identified as trigonal, with lattice parameters of a=0.83 nm, and c=2.62 nm, and point group ¯3m. The phase contains 68–73 at% Ti (48–54 wt% Ti).

Notes: Abstract The effect of Cu additions on the martensitic transformation sequence and temperature in Ti50−x/2Ni50−x/2Cu x alloys with x: 1–10 at% are investigated by ER, DSC, X-ray and IF measurements. Experimental results show that the transformation sequence of Ti50−x/2Ni50−x/2Cu x alloys with x: 1–4 at% proceeding as two-stage B2→R→B19′ transformation on cooling and Ti50−x/2Ni50−x/2Cu x alloys with x=5, 10 at% have no martensitic transformation. The addition of Cu in Ti50−x/2Ni50−x/2Cu x alloys assists the formation of R-phase, a behaviour which is quite different from that in Ti50Ni50−x Cu x alloys. Both the Ms and T R temperatures decrease rapidly with increasing Cu addition in Ti50−x/2Ni50−x/2Cu x alloys with x: 1–4 at%. It is proposed that the Cu+Ni effects on the Ms temperature in Ti50−x/2Ni50−x/2Cu x alloys is similar as Cu +Ni effects in Ti50Ni50−x Cu x alloys and as Ni effects in as-quenched Ni-rich TiNi alloys.
