Notes: Because of the difficulty of producing F1 hybrid seeds by hand emasculation and pollination, wide use of heterosis in cotton production has been limited in China. The objective of this study was to evaluate the potential of F2 hybrids for yield and fibre quality. A half diallel involving eight parents and their F1 and F2 hybrids was grown in replicated studies at Linqing and Nanjing in 1999 and Nanjing in 2000. Yield and fibre quality was determined for all 64 entries. Fibre quality was also determined for parents and F1s, but only for Zhongmiansuo 28 (ZMS28), Xiangzamian 2 (XZM2) and Wanmian 13 (WM13) F2s. These three F2 hybrids are extensively planted in China and provide experimental controls with which to compare the performance of new hybrids. Average yield heterosis for F1s and F2s was 15.9 and 9.2%, respectively. Inbreeding depression for yield varied but some F2s greatly out-yielded the best variety. Average F1 heterosis was 6.7, 6.2 and 2.9%, respectively for number of bolls per unit area, boll weight, and lint percentage. The average F2 heterosis for the same traits was 4.4, 3.3 and 1.6%, respectively. F1 heterosis for fibre traits was low. In general, parental average was a good indicator of the yield and fibre quality of F1 hybrids. These encouraging results suggest there is sufficient heterosis for yield to use F2s in China.

Notes: Abstract. Osteoporosis is one of the most common skeletal disorders affecting postmenopausal women. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether a 24-week program of aerobic high-impact loading exercise was beneficial for enhancing physical fitness and bone mineral density (BMD) in osteopenic postmenopausal women. Forty-three postmenopausal women aged 48–65 years participated in this study. The BMD of the spine (L2–L4) and right femoral neck of each woman was below 1 SD of the mean of premenopausal women, as examined by dual X-ray absorptiometry. The assignment of subjects into exercise or control group was not randomized but based on each subject's anticipated compliance to the 6-month long exercise program. Twenty-two subjects joined the exercise group and attended the training programs and 21 served as the control group. Exercise programs included treadmill walking at an intensity above 70% of maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max) for 30 minutes, followed by 10 minutes of stepping exercise using a 20-cm-high bench. The program was conducted three times per week for 24 weeks. Physical fitness measurements included testing of flexibility, muscular strength and endurance, body composition, and cardiopulmonary fitness. The results showed that the quadriceps strength, muscular endurance, and VO2max in the exercise group had significant improvements, whereas no improvement was found in any of the physical fitness parameters in the control group. The BMD of the L2–L4 and the femoral neck in the exercise group increased 2.0% (P 〉 0.05) and 6.8% (P 〈 0.05) and those in the control group decreased 2.3% (P 〈 0.05) and 1.5% (P 〉 0.05), respectively. In conclusion, aerobics combined with high-impact exercise at a moderate intensity was effective in offsetting the decline in BMD in osteopenic postmenopausal women.

Notes: Abstract Pre- and postoperative echocardiographic right ventricular wall thickness (RVW), transverse dimension (RVD), and their ratio (W/D) were measured from subcostal views in 29 patients with Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) in order to assess whether primary reparative surgery without prior palliative shunts in early infancy results in significantly faster regression of RV hypertrophy than repair later in life. Fourteen patients who were repaired before 6 months of age were compared with 15 patients who were repaired after 6 months of age. In the group of patients who were repaired before 6 months of age both RVW and W/D ratio decreased significantly whereas RVD did not change from pre- to postoperative status. The group of patients who were repaired after 6 months of age showed no significant changes in RVW, RVD, or W/D ratio. These findings suggest that early primary reparative surgery of TOF may have a positive effect on faster regression of RVH during the first postoperative year which may reduce the detrimental effect of longstanding hypertrophy on myocardial function and the potential for arrhythmia.

Notes: Storage stability of an aqueous phenolic dispersion resin has been studied by accelerated methods with chemical kinetics and centrifugation. The activation energy of the resin advancement reaction was 25.6 kcal/g mole. Results indicate that the chemical and physical properties of the dispersion resin do not change significantly in a storage period of 4.5 months under normal conditions (25°C). Under refrigeration (4°C) the product is stable indefinitely for all practical purposes.
