Notes: The photodissociation of CBrCl3 at 193 nm has been studied by translational spectroscopy. Two major dissociation channels, (1) CBrCl3→CCl3+Br and (2) CBrCl3→CBrCl2+Cl, are detected with product translational energies of 17 and 22 kcal/mol, respectively. The relative yield of (1):(2) is calculated to be 7:3. The primary product, CBrCl2, which is internally excited, undergoes unimolecular decay to form the CCl2+Br products. From the derived values of the anisotropy parameter β, we conclude that these processes take place rapidly after excitation via an A1←A1 transition, with the transition moment aligned parallel to the threefold axis. Results obtained for these two primary pathways and other minor processes are discussed in terms of a simple direct dissociation mechanism. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: SYNOPSIS. Single megaloschizonts give rise to elongate and round gametocytes, the former outnumbering the latter. Male and female elongate gametocytes develop from merozoites of a single megaloschizont. Elongate gametocytes were seen 2–7 days and round gametocytes 6–11 days after megaloschizonts had been inoculated into ducklings. Experimental evidence indicates that merozoites of megaloschizonts invade blood cells and develop into elongate gametocytes. Other merozoites infect tissue cells and develop into secondary exoerythrocytic schizonts which give rise to round gametocytes. Relapse in Leucocytozoon simondi infections is discussed in relation to megaloschizont-induced exoerythrocytic schizogony.

Notes: We report the first continuous wave room-temperature InGaAs-GaAs-AlGaAs strained-layer semiconductor laser diode grown by molecular beam epitaxy. The laser is a multiple quantum well transverse junction stripe laser with a lateral heterojunction fabricated by zinc diffusion enhanced compositional disordering. The low-threshold (20 mA) and single-mode performance of the laser demonstrates that a high-quality lateral p+-p-n junction and lateral heterobarrier can be formed by zinc diffusion compositional disordering of a strained-layer InGaAs-GaAs-AlGaAs quantum well heterostructure.

Notes: Room-temperature continuous-wave (cw) lasing operation with a threshold current (Ith) of 3 mA and a pulsed Ith as low as 1.5 mA were achieved in mushroom structure surface- emitting lasers utilizing a 300 A(ring) GaAs single quantum well as an active layer and an AlAs/Al0.1Ga0.9As multilayer as the top and the bottom distributed Bragg reflectors. A series resistance of 250 Ω was obtained on devices with an 8×8 μm2 active region using selective zinc diffusion. A differential quantum efficiency of 12%–20% and a maximum cw light output power exceeding 1 mW were achieved. The emission wavelength was 860 nm with a spectral linewidth of ∼0.5 A(ring).

Notes: We report the results of investigations on the transient heating and series resistance of a vertical-microcavity surface-emitting (VMSE) laser with an air-bridge structure. Transient temperature broadening of the lasing spectrum and chirping of the current versus voltage characteristic are analyzed experimentally and theoretically. We believe that the experiments provide us valuable information on the severity of the heating problems in VMSE laser.

Notes: A modulation bandwidth approaching 5 GHz in a GaAs quantum well vertical cavity surface emitting laser with a mushroom mesa structure is reported. The modulation speed and the maximum power of 1.5 mW were limited by device heating. The second harmonic distortion as a function of frequency was measured at an injection current twice threshold and an optical modulation index of 10%, and a peak distortion of about −25 dBc was obtained.

Notes: Monolithic integration of a vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) and a metal semiconductor field effect transistor (MESFET) is reported for the first time. The epitaxial layers for both GaAs VCSELs and MESFETs are grown on an n-type GaAs substrate by molecular-beam epitaxy (MBE) at the same time. The VCSELs with a 10 μm diam active region exhibit an average threshold current (Ith) of 6 mA and a continuous wave (cw) maximum power of 1.1 mW. The MESFETs with a 3 μm gate length have a transconductance of 50 mS/mm. The laser output is modulated by the gate voltage of the MESFETs and exhibits an optical/electrical conversion factor of 0.5 mW/V.

Notes: Abstract  To assess trends in antimicrobial-resistant Salmonella infections from 1989 to 1996 in southern Taiwan, the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of 14 antibiotics or antibiotic combinations were determined by the agar dilution method for 297 clinical isolates of nontyphoidal Salmonella. The rates of resistance to ampicillin, chloramphenicol, and tetracycline were 65, 67, and 78%, respectively. Resistance to trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMX) increased from 25% in 1989–1992 to 35% in 1993–1996 (P=0.057). For new quinolones and extended-spectrum cephalosporins, no resistant strains were encountered. Multiple resistance to more than five antimicrobial drugs doubled from 10.6% in 1989–1992 to 19.7% in 1993–1996. Multiply resistant salmonellae were isolated more commonly from blood samples than from feces (30% vs. 14%, P〈0.05). In Taiwan, ampicillin, chloramphenicol, and even TMP-SMX are no longer the drugs of choice for treatment of serious nontyphoidal Salmonella infections. Extended-spectrum cephalosporins are now the preferred drugs in Taiwan for treatment of invasive Salmonella infections in children.

Notes: Summary This study presents the numerical calculations of the fluid flow and turbulent heat transfer characteristics of hot flow over a sudden-expansion with cold air base mass injection. The turbulent governing equations are solved by a control-volume-based finite-difference method with power-law scheme, the well knownk-ε model, and its associate wall function to describe the turbulent behavior. The velocity and pressure terms of momentum equations are solved by the SIMPLE (Semi-Implicid Method for Pressure-Linked Equation) method. In this study non uniform staggered grids are used. The parameters interested include the inlet Reynolds number (Re), inlet temperature (T0), and the injection flow rate (Q). The numerical results show that the reattachment lengths are reasonably predicted with a maximum discrepancy within 9.1%. It also shows that the base mass injection suppresses the horizontal velocity and turbulence intensity. In these high temperature heat transfer characteristics, the heat transfer coefficient increased with increasing inlet temperature and inlet Reynolds number, but decreased with increasing injection flow rate of the cooling air.

Notes: Abstract A buoy-mounted Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler was deployed on the shelf break off the northeast coast of Taiwan to monitor current variations in the upper ocean. The acquired data show that the flow in the upper water column was initially southwest and then abruptly turned northwest. This abrupt change occurred in mid-October, starting from the surface layer and then gradually extending to the deeper layer. In contrast with this flow, the flow in the lower water column was southwest over the entire record, but its amplitude was reduced after the middle of October. The abrupt change of current from southwest to northwest is related to the intrusion of Kuroshio. Examination of two CTD casts showed the salinity of the upper ocean to have increased after the directional shift in mid-October, further indicating the Kuroshio intrusion. The sea level data at Keelung provided other evidence for the intrusion of Kuroshio. The sea level descended as the intrusion occurred and kept the low value until the end of the record. The northwest flow, which carried the water away from the northern coast of Taiwan, is responsible for this descent. Although the intrusion of Kuroshio was mainly confined to the upper ocean, it did have influence on the whole water column. Examination of the wind record at Pengchiayu showed that the time of Kuroshio intrusion was not coincident with the intensification of the northeasterly monsoon. The local wind and the current at 20 m were incoherent. Both the variation of Kuroshio current and the fluctuation of Kuroshio path may be responsible for the variation of the local current. Since the intrusion of Kuroshio has a weak relationship with local wind variation, it appears to be induced by non-local factors.
