Notes: Black-pigmented bacteria which produce cytotoxic metabolic end-products and cell membrane-associated proteases have been reported to play an important role in the pathogenesis of periodontal diseases. These bacterial virulence factors can be modified by the environmental conditions including nutrients supplied variously into the oral cavity. Although glucose is one of the most essential nutrients for oral bacteria, the exogenous supply of glucose may be discontinuous and the glucose concentration in a periodontal pocket may be influenced by the depth of the periodontal pocket. Therefore, effects of glucose as an environmental factor on the virulence factors of Prevotella intermedia, Prevotella nigrescens and Porphyromonas gingivalis were studied. When grown in the presence of glucose, both P. intermedia and P. nigrescens markedly decreased the production of cytotoxic end-products including succinate, isobutyrate, isovalerate and ammonia, although their growth was increased. Furthermore, the proteolytic activities such as immunoglobulin-, albumin- and casein-degrading activities of these bacteria were decreased in the presence of glucose. On the other hand, no effect of glucose on the metabolic activity of P. gingivalis was observed. These results suggest that pathogenicity of P. intermedia and P. nigrescens may be decreased by the presence of glucose.

Notes: Abstract A 52-year old man underwent successful surgical removal of renal cell carcinoma with inferior vena caval and right atrial involvement, under cardio-pulmonary bypass. The postoperative progress was uneventful and at this writing he is doing well, with no evidence of metastasis.

Notes: Abstract A series of bulk glasses in the TiO2-SiO2 system have been prepared by hydrolysing the mixture solution of Ti(OC3H7)4 and Si(OC2H5)4 with water and hydrochloric acid, and slowly heating the resultant gels up to 800° C. The conversion of gels to glasses was examined by the measurements of Vickers' hardness, IR and TGA. The properties of TiO2-SiO2 glasses in the less than 12.9 wt% TiO2 range obtained by the gel method were very similar to those of oxide glasses made by the flame hydrolysis process. These glasses showed ultra-low thermal expansion, but the precipitation of anatase remarkably increased the thermal expansion. In the less than 10.4 wt% TiO2 range, the glasses obtained by heating up to 800° C were not crystallized at 1000° C or higher, while in the more than 20 wt% TiO2 range anatase was precipitated at 900° C. It was found that glasses obtained by the gel method were a true solid solution at least up to 7.4 wt% TiO2 composition.

Notes: A series of cyanoethylated celluloses with various degrees of substitution was prepared by homogeneous reaction of cellulose in PF/DMSO system. Their thermal deformation properties changed regularly with the degree of cyanoethylation. By comparing highly cyanoethylated cellulose in the series with that prepared by a traditional cyanoethylation method, it was seen that they were quite different in physical properties such as thermal deformation or tensile properties. Based on the results of dynamic mechanical measurements and infrared spectroscopy, cyanoethylated cellulose prepared in PF/DMSO system was found to be a new cellulose derivative, which includes oligo-oxymethylene groups at the position between the glucopyraneose ring and the cyanoethyl group in the side chain. The maximum DS value of this cyanoethylated cellulose was estimated to be ca. 2.5.

Notes: Homogeneous periodate oxidation of cellulose was achieved through methylol cellulose. The dissolution of methylol cellulose into aqueous periodate solution was followed by the gradual decomposition of methylol groups at random sites along the methylol cellulose chain. The recovery of glycol hydroxyl groups at the C2 and C3 positions on the glucopyranose ring during the above decomposition process caused uniform cleavage of C2—C3 bonds by the periodate ion. The oxidation level reached nearly 100% in 10 h. The reduced product of the resulting dialdehyde cellulose, i.e., dialcohol cellulose, resulted in mechanical properties quite different from those of conventional dialcohol cellulose. Examination of the thermal deformation and tensile properties revealed that no notable cellulose degradation occurred during the reaction. Our dialcohol cellulose gave a clear and transparent film with a flexible nature.

Notes: Four kinds of (cellulose oligo-oxymethylene ether) acylates from the acetate to the valerate were prepared by homogeneous reactions using a DMSO/PF cellulose solvent as the reaction medium. The temperature variations of dynamic modulus, loss modulus, and loss tangent for these polymers were measured. Three types of relaxation process were observed for all (cellulose oligo-oxymethylene ether) acylates, and an additional relaxation process was detected for (cellulose oligo-oxymethylene ether) butyrate and valerate. These processes were labelled α, β, γ, and δ in order of decreasing temperature at which they occurred. These α to δ processes were respectively attributed to: micro-Brownian motion (α), motion of side chains (β), local mode motion involving oxymethylene groups (γ), and motion initiated by three or more methylene groups (δ).

Notes: Thirteen kinds of cellulose acylates from the acetate to stearate were prepared by trifluoro acetic anhydride-fatty acid esterification, and their dielectric constant and loss were measured over wide temperature and frequency ranges. Two types of relaxation process (αd and βd) were recognized for all the acylates and an additional relaxation process (γd) was detected for the acylates with side chain length longer than that of the butyrate. These αd to γd processes were attributed to the micro-Brownian motion of the main chain (αd), the motion of oxycarbonyl group of the side chain (βd) and the motion initiated by minimum three methylene groups in addition to the oxycarbonyl group (γd), respectively. In the transition map for the βd process, inflection points were observed, and the temperature at the inflection point could be regarded as a freezing point of the micro-Brownian motion of the acyl side chain. In the temperature region above the inflection point, plots in transition map for all the acylates were found to be on the same straight line.

Notes: A series of (cellulose oligo-oxymethylene ether) acylates (COAs) are characterized by the presence of the micro-Brownian motion of the side chain (β process) which appears separately from that of the main chain (α process). Both the alpha; and β processes are largely affected by the kind of acyl groups introduced in the side chain. To clarify the effect of the acyl group on these processes, we investigated the dynamic mechanical properties of newly prepared COAs with acyl side chain, bulky in chemical structure (iso-butyrate, privalate, and benzoate) in relation to those for COAs with linear acyl side chain (acetate, butyrate, and valerate). By substituting bulky acyl isomer for linear acyl group in COAs, we observed that the temperature region of both the α and β processes moved to higher temperature. Furthermore, with an increase in molecular size of bulky acyl group, the β region shifts were much larger than the α region, indicating that the mobility of the side chain became comparable to that of the main chain. Finally, when such a large bulky group, for example, benzoate was introduced, the micro-Brownian motion of the side chain prior to that of the main chain ceased. The apparent activation energy for a third process (γ) due to the motion of the oligo-oxymethylene parts in the side chain was estimated to be 10.3 kcal/mol.
