Notes: Electric field-induced deformation modes, which are considered one of the causes of the hysteresis in the V-T response of polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC), were investigated. We constructed model PDLC cells with varied alignment treatments at the interface of the liquid crystal droplets. The electric field-induced deformation modes of the liquid crystals in the model cells were analyzed by polarized microscope observations. Our results suggested a possible way to hysteresis-free PDLC devices. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We have investigated the physical and dielectric properties of the Zr-silicate interfacial layer of ZrO2 metal-insulator-semiconductor (MIS) structure fabricated by pulsed-laser ablation deposition. It was found that an ultrathin Zr-silicate interfacial layer is formed on a Si substrate as a result of the reaction between ZrO2 and Si. We showed that MIS capacitors consisting solely of the ultrathin Zr-silicate interfacial layer could be fabricated by selective etching of the ZrO2 layer. The Zr-silicate interfacial layer showed a small equivalent oxide thickness of 0.8 nm, a dielectric constant of 8–9, and low leakage less than 1 A/cm2 at Vg of −1 V. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) is a central component of the elicitor-induced defence reactions in cultured cells as well as the resistance responses of plants to pathogen challenge. We show that N-acetylchitooligosaccharide elicitor induces rapid and transient activation of phosphatidylinositol-specific phospholipase C (PI-PLC) and that phosphatidylcholine-specific phospholipase D (PC-PLD) in suspension-cultured rice cells and their products, phosphatidic acid (PA) and diacylglycerol (DG), especially the former, play an important role in the elicitor-induced ROS generation based on the following observations: (1) the amount of PA and DG in rice cells was rapidly increased by the elicitor treatment. (2) Elicitor-induced activation of PI-PLC and PC-PLD in the membrane fraction was confirmed by the analysis of enzymatic products from radio-labelled phospholipids as well as by 1-butanol (1-ButOH)-specific formation of phosphatidylbutanol (PtdBut) (for PC-PLD). Inhibitors of these phospholipases at least partly inhibited the elicitor-induced ROS generation. (3) Exogenously applied PA and DG could induce ROS generation in the rice cells in the absence of the elicitor. (4) PA phosphohydrolase (PAPH) and diacylglycerol kinase (DGK) activities, which catalyse the conversion of PA and DG with each other, are present in the rice cells and the inhibitors of these enzymes inhibited/stimulated the elicitor-induced ROS generation depending on the direction of the PA accumulation. These results indicate the important role of PI-PLC/PC-PLD and their products, especially PA, in the signal transduction cascade downstream of the N-acetylchitooligosaccharide receptor.

Notes: The reflective cholesteric texture mode between planar and homeotropic textures, which can achieve a high contrast ratio, needs to be coupled with an active matrix drive scheme such as a method using thin film transistors. In this article, the threshold voltage of the cholesteric–nematic phase transition, an important characteristic related to the requirements of active matrix drive schemes, is discussed. We investigated the role of the cell gap in determining the reflectance, and studied the effects of varying the nematic liquid crystal and chiral component of the cholesteric mixture. The cell gap needs to be optimized for lower threshold voltage and higher reflectance. The chiral component and the nematic liquid crystal both have a strong effect on the threshold voltage. On the basis of these results, novel chiral materials are proposed. This study demonstrates that some of these materials successfully contribute to the reduction of the threshold voltage. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We present evidence that the rice receptor for N-acetylchitooligosaccharide elicitor does not couple to heterotrimeric G-protein (G-protein), one of the most important signal transducers from the cell surface to down-stream effectors in various cellular responses of many organisms. Using mutant rice cells lacking functional G-protein α-subunit, cellular responses of suspension-cultured rice cells derived from Daikoku dwarf (d1) mutants that were shown to contain mutations in the coding region of the G-protein α-subunit (Fujisawa et al. 1999) to N-acetylchitooligosaccharide (oligochitin) elicitor were compared with those of the corresponding parent cell lines. All the elicitor-induced cellular responses, such as medium alkalinization, generation of reactive oxygen species, expression of early responsive genes, PAL and PR genes, and production of phytoalexin, were basically identical in the mutant and wild type cell lines. Considering the reported presence of a single copy gene for the G-protein α-subunit in many plant species including rice, these results strongly support the above conclusion.

Notes: In order to make the effect of processing clear, AM50A magnesium casting alloys were extruded at various extrusion conditions such as extrusion temperature and extrusion ratio. The mechanical properties of AM50A alloy increased with decreasing extrusion temperature. Tensile yield strength and tensile strength of extruded AM50A alloy were 389MPa and 420MPa respectively when the extrusion temperature was 348K. The microstructure of the extruded magnesium alloy showed large grains stretched to the extrusion direction and fine recrystallized grains. Decreased extrusion temperature resulted in improved strength and decreased elongation with increasing of the degree of work hardens and extrusion force. When the extrusion ratio is high, improvement of strength is prevented by rycrystallization and it was observed as crystal orientation by XRD. The elongation of the extrusion increased with the recrystallization of grains. Every magnesium alloy extruded at low temperature has high strength

Notes: Abstract To examine which species of ant are underground predators, we invented a simple bait trap using live mealworms as bait. A total of 75 bait traps were buried in soil at various depths (10, 20, 30 and 50 cm) to investigate the vertical distribution of predatory ants. The ants captured in approximately 50% of the traps were mostlyTetramorium caespitum andSolenopsis japonica. Solenopsis japonica was captured at greater depths (〉30 m) thanT. caespitum. Eight kinds of soil invertebrate (the earthworm, wood louse, pill bug, millipede, adults of the dung beetle and carabid beetle, larvae of a cetoniine beetle and the earwig), placed in traps at a depth of 10 cm, varied greatly in attractiveness and vulnerability to ant predation. The earthworm and the wood louse were both attractive and vulnerable to ant predation, whereas the pill bug, the dung beetle and the millipede were attractive but not vulnerable. The larvae of a cetoniine beetle, the carabid beetle and the earwig were mostly unattractive.
