Notizen: The present study investigates the contribution of first language (L1) reading ability and second or foreign language (L2) proficiency to L2 reading comprehension, by focusing on the compensation between L1 reading ability and L2 proficiency. Two research questions were addressed: (1) does high L1 reading ability compensate for low L2 language proficiency? (2) does high L2 language proficiency compensate for low L1 reading ability? Participants were 241 Japanese university students learning English as a foreign language. They were divided into three levels (high, middle, low) according to the levels of their L1 reading ability and L2 language proficiency. Effects of these two factors on L2 reading ability were analysed by analysis of variance. A multiple regression analysis to estimate a compensation model was also applied. Results provided positive answers to both research questions. The present study thus demonstrates the mutual compensation between L1 reading ability and L2 proficiency, which works in order to achieve the highest possible level of L2 reading comprehension for readers with different ability backgrounds in L1 reading and L2 proficiency.

Notizen: Abstract The complete nucleotide sequence of the rDNA large spacer region was determined for two related legume plants,Vicia faba andPisum sativum. In the large spacers of both plants, there were one or several tandem arrays of repeated sequences which accunt well for the length heterogeneity of the rDNA repeating units. When the entire lengths ofVicia andPisum rDNA large spacers were compared, significant sequence similarity ranging from approximately 50 to 80% was observed, thus a close phylogenetical relationship was revealed. However, organization patterns of these rDNA spacers were clearly different from each other. ThePisum rDNA large spacer contained only one type of repeated sequence of about 175 bp, whereas theVicia contained five kinds of repeated sequence. In addition, the initiation site for transcription was tentatively determined by S1 protection experiment.

Notizen: Thermoresponsive porous gel membranes were synthesized by a simultaneously occurring process consisting of radiation-induced polymerization and crosslinking in aqueous solutions at various concentrations of acryloyl-L-proline methyl ester(A-ProOMe) without a crosslinker. Permeation of p-nitrophenol (PNP) through a thermoresponsive porous gel membrane obtained at a monomer concentration of 80% (w/w) drastically reduced around 14°C, the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of linear poly(A-ProOMe) in water, from 0.60 × 10-3 cm/min at 10°C to no permeation at 18°C, accompanied by changes in both size and shape of pores associated with gel shrinkage. Moreover, it was found that porous gel membranes with a porosity of approximately 60% had a greater PNP permeability constant through porous gel membranes with mutually connected pores obtained at a monomer concentration of 50% (w/w) than individually supported pores obtained at a monomer concentration of 70% (w/w). © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
