Notizen: Nematic and smectic liquid crystals are homogeneously aligned on polyimide Langmuir–Blodgett films prepared by horizontal lifting on a novel Langmuir trough using a flowing subphase. Atomic force microscopy observation of the polymer monolayer deposited on graphite reveals that the polymer chains are elongated and aligned in the flow direction. Thus the alignment may act through the orientation of polyimide molecules.

Notizen: Neurogenesis in the adult mammalian hippocampus may contribute to repairing the brain after injury. The signals that regulate neurogenesis in the dentate gyrus following ischemic stroke insult are not well known. We have previously reported that inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) expression is necessary for ischemia-stimulated neurogenesis in the adult dentate gyrus. Here, we show that mice subjected to 90 min of middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) significantly increased the number of new neurons and up-regulated iNOS expression in the dentate gyrus. Blockade of the L-type voltage-gated Ca2+ channel (L-VGCC) prevented neurogenesis in the dentate gyrus and subventricular zone (SVZ), and down-regulated iNOS expression in the dentate gyrus after cerebral ischemia. This study suggests that Ca2+ influx through L-VGCC is involved in ischemia-induced neurogenesis by up-regulating iNOS expression.

Notizen: Abstract The effects of clonidine on the antianxiety and sedation of benzodiazepines (BZD) were assessed respectively in rats trained in a two-lever diazepam cue discrimination procedure and in single-lever fixed-ratio (FR) water-reinforced performance. Clonidine (10–60 μg/kg) significantly shifted to the left the dose-effect curves of diazepam in the discrimination paradigm. This treatment also shifted generalization dose-effect curves of the diazepam cue to chlordiazepoxide and CL 218872 to the left in the drug discrimination procedure. The diazepam cue was antagonized in a dose-related manner by Ro 15-1788, but not by bicuculline. Clonidine also potentiated the rate-decreasing effects of diazepam on the FR schedule when the dose of diazepam was increased to 0.3 mg/kg, but not the milder rate-decreasing effect of CL 218872 until the dose of CL 218872 was increased to 10 mg/kg. The potentiating effects of clonidine on the stimulus control and depression of diazepam were antagonized by yohimbine. Yohimbine (1.0 mg/kg) also significantly shifted the dose-effect curve of diazepam cue to the right. Bicuculline (3 mg/kg) completely antagonized the rate-decreasing effect of diazepam (1 mg/kg), but significantly potentiated the rate-suppressant effect of clonidine (10 μg/kg). These results suggest that the central noradrenaline (NA) system may be involved not only in the antianxiety, but also the sadative action of BZD. The nature of NA involvement in relation to the different subtypes of BZD receptors requires further exploration.

Notizen: N-(p-Tolyl)-N′,N′-diethyldithiocarbamoylacetamide was prepared and used as a new photoiniferter for polymerization of styrene in bulk under UV light. This photopolymerization showed some specific character, i.e., molecular weights of resulting polymers increase with reaction time and monomer conversion, respectively. The reversible reaction between growing radical and dormant species was confirmed by electron spin resonance using 2-methyl-2-nitrosopropane as a spin trapping agent. Thus, the end functionalized polymer, N,N-diethyldithiocarbamoyl-terminated polystyrene, reinitiated photopolymerization of methyl methacrylate and vinyl acetate to form block copolymers. The molecular weight distribution about 2.7 indicated that the polymerization is not a strictly living radical polymerization. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
