Notes: Neonatal jaundice (15 mg. or more of total bilirubin per 100 ml.) occurred in 2687 out of 22 122 babies in Hong Kong (12·1 per cent). Jaundice was significantly more common in summer, in first born babies and in male infants. The aetiology of neonatal jaundice in Chinese newborn infants is different from that in western communities.Vacuum extraction was found to predispose to neonatal jaundice even when no obvious cephalhaematoma developed.

Notes: Summary. The study was designed to identify those pregnant women who are diagnosed as having gestational diabetes by National Diabetes Data Group (NDDG) criteria, but normal glucose tolerance (NGT) or impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) by the World Health Organization (WHO) criteria, and to test whether treatment changed the perinatal outcome in those with NGT and IGT. The 216 women with an abnormal 100 g oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) using NDDG criteria were subjected to a 75 g OGTT. Using the WHO criteria, 111 women (51%) had NGT, 98 (45%) had IGT and 7 (3%) had frank diabetes mellitus. Those with NGT and IGT were randomized into control and treatment groups. The perinatal outcome in these two groups was comparable whether the NGT and IGT groups were analysed together or separately except, that in those who were treated for IGT, smaller babies were born one week earlier than in the control group (3407 g vs 3110g, P〈0·01). This suggests that the WHO criteria can safely replace the 100 g OGTT with substantial savings in manpower, money and patients' time.

Notes: Abstract Gastro-intestinal bleeding is an uncommon presentation in children with neurofibromatosis. Gastro-intestinal involvement caused by jejunal leiomyoma has only been described in adults. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first paediatric case of jejunal leiomyoma associated with neurofibromatosis. We present a 10-year-old girl with a 9-month history of anaemia and low gastro-intestinal bleeding. Abdominal sonography and small bowel series showed a submucosal mass in the proximal jejunum. On surgery, a submucosal tumour was excised and histological examination suggested a diagnosis of “smooth muscle tumour of undetermined malignant potential”. There were no recurrence of symptoms for 4 years after the operation. Conclusion Jejunal leiomyoma should be considered in a child with neurofibromatosis presenting with gastro-intestinal bleeding.

Notes: Abstract A comparison was made between direct and indirect fluorescent-antibody staining techniques using commercial monoclonal antibodies for detection of respiratory syncytial virus in respiratory secretions. Overall agreement between the two tests was 94 %. Using virus isolation as the reference method, the indirect test had a higher sensitivity but a similar specificity when compared with the direct test. The slight delay in reporting using the indirect technique is not clinically significant and is offset by the possibility of convenient combination of the technique with indirect fluorescent-antibodies for detection of other respiratory viruses in respiratory secretions.

Notes: Electromagnetic and acoustic scattering from bodies many wavelengths long presents some of the largest computational problems, with costs scaling with the fourth to sixth power of incident frequency. Parallel processing offers one contributory route to the increase in computational power required for such analyses. The paper presents a parallel implementation of the integral formulation of the transient wave equation. It is demonstrated that it is the repeated evaluation of far field effects which is the dominant cost, and that with appropriate domain partitioning this process can be parallelised very effectively. Results for scattering problems comprising up to 1658 nodes are presented, evaluated on 64- and 128-processor systems.
