Notes: Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) was administered orally to 57 pregnant women who required induction of labour. Labour was successfully induced in 46 patients (80 per cent). No serious fetal or maternal complications resulted.

Notes: Methotrexate and 6-mercaptopurine given to five cases of undelivered hydatidiform mole brought about degeneration of molar vesicles in utero, which was indicated by a fall in urinary gonadotrophin and a reduction in the size of the uterus. Spontaneous evacuation of the molar tissue occurred in three cases and artificial termination in two. All evacuated and surgical specimens showed various degrees of degeneration of the molar vesicles. In the last follow-up 28 months later all five patients were alive and well with no evidence of trophoblastic disease.

Notes: A series of 18 patients with methotrexate-resistant trophoblastic tumours were treated with actinomycin D at the Queen Mary Hospital, Hong Kong, over a period of three years. Complete remission was attained with ten patients and eight died of the disease. The tumour response was better in patients with low gonadotrophin levels and was unaffected by the addition of 6-mercaptopurine to the methotrexate. The prognosis was poor when the primary chemotherapy had been used for too long, or when certain organs or multiple sites were involved. Thus, of the nine patients who had received the primary chemotherapy for a period of only 6 to 12 weeks, seven went into complete remission; whereas, of the other nine patients who had received it for more than 12 weeks, only three went into complete remission. All patients with involvement of the brain or kidney or multiple sites died of the disease. Therefore the primary chemotherapy should be discontinued when continuous response is not observed during the first 6 to 12 weeks treatment. It is essential to make an early diagnosis of the resistant tumour which, however, depends chiefly on the availability of accurate gonadotrophin assays.

Notes: Abstract We consider an interface with finite transmission between two superconductors. We show that in some cases the general non-linear boundary condition for the quasiclassical Green’s function derived independently by Kieselmann and Zaitsev can be factorized into a linear effective boundary condition. This result is then applied to the josephson current-phase relationships for junctions between two $$d_{x^2 - y^2 } $$ super conductors. In particular we study the phase difference χm across a junction where its energy is at a minimum as a function of the temperature and orientations of the superconductors. Experimental implications are discussed.

Notes: Abstract We study the thermal conductivity within the E1g and E2u models for superconductivity in UPt3 and compare the theoretical results for electronic heat transport with recently measured results reported by Lussier, Ellman and Taillefer. The existing data down to T/Tc ≈ 0.1 provides convincing evidence for the presence of both line and point nodes in the gap, but the data can be accounted for either by an E1g or E2u order parameter. We discuss the features of the pairing symmetry, Fermi surface, and excitation spectrum that are reflected in the thermal conductivity at very low temperatures. Significant differences between the E1g and E2u models are predicted to develop at excitation energies below the bandwidth of the impurity-induced Andreev bound states. The zero-temperature limit of the ĉ axis thermal conductivity, limT→0 kc/T, isuniversal for the E2u model, but non-universal for the E1g model. Thus, impurity concentration studies at very low temperatures should differentiate between the nodal structures of the E2u and E1g models.

Notes: Abstract We present theoretical calculations of the thermal conductivity for the “accidental degeneracy” and “enlarged symmetry group” models that have been proposed to explain the phase diagram of UPt 3 . The order parameters for these models possess point nodes or cross nodes, reflecting the broken symmetries of the ground state. These broken symmetries lead to robust predictions for the ratio of the low-temperature thermal conductivity for heat flow along the ĉ axis and in the basal plane. The anisotropy of the heat current response at low temperatures is determined by the phase space for scattering by impurities. The measured anisotropy ratio, κ c/κ b, provides a strong constraint on theoretical models for the ground state order parameter. The accidental degeneracy and enlarged symmetry group models based on no spin-orbit coupling do not account for the thermal conductivity of UPt 3. The models for the order parameter that fit the experimental data for the ĉ and $${\hat c}$$ directions of the heat current are the 2D E1g and E 2u models, for which the order parameters possess line nodes in the ab-plane and point nodes along the ĉ axis, and the A1g⊕E 1g model of Zhitomirsky and Ueda. This model spontaneously breaks rotational symmetry in the ab-plane below Tc2 and predicts a large anisotropy for the ab-plane heat current.

Notes: Abstract Postvoid residual bladder volume (PVRBV) was estimated in 89 patients with postpartum urinary retention using two ultrasonographic volume estimation methods. The PVRBV estimated by transabdominal and transvaginal ultrasonography are compared using the plot of difference against mean and the pairedt-test. Neither showed any significant difference between the two methods (paired samplet-test,P〉0.05). The two methods have high correlation coefficient of 0.903 (Spearman's correlation,P〈0.0001). Either ultrasonographic volume estimation method gives reasonable bladder volume assessment in postpartum patients and could be used interchangeably as the clinical situation requires.

Notes: Abstract Suprapubic catheterization is a common procedure in continence surgery and hematuria is a common complication after suprapubic catheterization. The authors report an unusual case of acute clot retention after the removal of a Cystofix suprapubic catheter in a patient who had had a Burch colposuspension. Suprapublic cystotomy as an alternate suprapublic method is also discussed.
