Notes: Summary.   Eleven epitopes were identified by murine monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) that represented the N, M, GP5 and GP3 proteins of the North American (NA) porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) virus, KY 35 (NVSL 46907). Three discontinuous epitopes of the N and M proteins were designated EpORF7-Fd through Hd and EpORF6-Ad through Cd. Five continuous epitopes of the GP5 and GP3 proteins were designated EpORF5-A through C and EpORF3-A and B. The MAbs representing EpORF5-C and EpORF6-A and B had neutralizing activity. The MAbs representing the above epitopes, except EpORF7-Gd and Hd, expanded the virus marker system described in a previous study in which a panel of 69 NA viruses and the Lelystad virus were categorized into 5 antigenic groups, I15 through V15 based on the presence or absence of 5 continuous epitopes of the N protein. Antigenic groups I15 and II15, which represented 84.7 and 11.6% of all viruses tested, were categorized further into 9 and 4 subgroups, respectively. The remaining NA viruses and the Lelystad virus were distributed among 4 groups, one of which was represented by 2 subgroups. Significant (P〈0.05) differences in sensitivity to neutralization of 28 viruses representing 6 antigenic groups by the 3 neutralizing MAbs suggested that sensitivity to neutralization may also be of value in categorizing PRRS viruses.

Notes: Summary.  The antigenic variability of the 15 kD nucleocapsid protein of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) virus was characterized with a panel of 24 monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) raised against the American PRRS virus isolate ISU-P. Five continuous epitopes designated EpORF7-A through E were revealed by the reactivity pattern of these MAbs with 67 American field isolates, two modified-live vaccine viruses, and the European Lelystad virus as determined by the indirect immnofluorescence assay and Western immunoblotting and confirmed by additivity and blocking enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. The reactivity pattern of isolates in the IFA permitted their subdivision into 4 American antigenic groups which represented 84.1, 11.6, 2.9 and 1.4% of viruses tested. The antigenic variation among isolates was correlated to single, group specific nucleotide substitutions and mediated by a combination of at least 4 of the 5 epitopes. EpORF7-A was conserved in all American isolates and the Lelystad virus which constituted a separate antigenic group. Consequently, monoclonal antibodies specific for EpORF7-A may prove useful as the antigenic basis for a universal diagnostic test for the PRRS virus. EpORF7-C, D and E were only present in the American isolates tested.

Notes: Abstract The fracture toughness of 2-D woven carbon fibre reinforced carbon laminate has been evaluated by linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM),R-curve andJ-integral analysis using the single edge-notched bending (SENB) specimen of edge and flatwise geometries. The edgewise specimens failed by a small extension of the self similar crack whereas the flatwise specimens failed by delamination. The surface damage developing from the tip of the initial crack was revealed by the brittle lacquer coating technique and the zone shape varied with the specimen geometry, i.e. the loading axis relative to the woven layers. Acoustic emission (AE) was also used to monitor crack growth, and the total ring down count of AE was observed to increase as the initial crack length was decreased. Both the damage zone size and total AE counts were found to increase in two linear stages as a function of the square of the stress intensity factor,K.

Notes: Abstract In a study designed to provide data on the rates of maternal carriage of group B streptococci (GBS) in Korean women, vaginal, anorectal, and urethral swab specimens from 459 pregnant women and ear canal and umbilicus swabs from their 288 neonates were cultured with new Granada medium and selective Todd-Hewitt broth. Additionally, the serotypes of 64 isolates of GBS and the minimal inhibitory concentrations of seven antimicrobial agents for these isolates were determined. The rate of colonization by GBS in pregnant women and in their babies was 5.9% (27/459) and 0.7% (2/288), respectively. The rates of resistance of GBS isolated from pregnant women were 13.3% to clindamycin, 5% to erythromycin, and 98.3% to tetracycline. The majority of GBS isolates from pregnant women belonged to serotypes Ib (48.3%), la (24.1 %), and III (20.7%).

Notes: When a melt-spun poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) fiber is heat treated at a temperature above its glass transition temperature, the relative rates at which the crystallization and major orientational relaxation processes occur have been shown to have a pronounced effect on the structure of the fiber and its deformability. The present study describes the consequences of this aspect, with examples from drawing of melt-spun PET fibers subsequent to their crystallization by thermal annealing. Additional features of the highly ordered PET fibers which can be produced through a combination of oriented crystallization and drawing at high temperatures are also given.

Notes: Acrylonitrile (AN) was graft polymerized onto unmodified cornstarch by a continuous reactive extrusion process and, for comparison, by a typical batch reaction process. The effect of AN/starch weight ratios, level of ceric ammonium nitrate (CAN) initiator, starch in water concentration, reaction temperature, reaction time, and extruder screw speed in the reactive extrusion process was studied. Add-on, reaction efficiency, grafting frequency, weight average molecular weight (MW) and MW distribution of polyacrylonitrile (PAN), and water absorbency of the saponified copolymers were determined. Processing times in the twin-screw extruder (ZSK) were 2-3 min, and total reaction time was about 7 min before reaction of the extruded material was terminated, compared to a reaction time of 2 h used in the typical batch procedure. The continuous reactive extrusion process was found to be a rapid and efficient means of preparing St-g-PAN with high add-on (% PAN of the grafted product). For example, 42% add-on was achieved within the 7-min reaction period using an AN/starch weight ratio of 1.0 (3.5% CAN, starch weight basis), as compared to 38-49% for the 2-h batch process (0.75-1.5 AN/starch ratio). Percentages of homopolymer of the copolymers were low for both extrusion and batch processes. Grafting frequencies were substantially higher while MWs were significantly lower for grafts from the extrusion process. Water absorbency of the saponified St-g-PAN products was somewhat greater for the products prepared by the batch process.
