Notes: The magneto-optic response of Pt/Co superlattices is simulated to gain insight into the recent experimental findings of favorable information-storage characteristics. Major trends are reproduced qualitatively, and the calculations indicate that the Pt contributes significantly to the short-wavelength polar Kerr signal (at 4 eV). The influences of the wavelength, angle of incidence, component thicknesses, overcoat, and substrate on the rotation, ellipticity, and reflectivity are evaluated.

Notes: Numerical simulations of the Kerr signals from Cu/Co, Pd/Co, and Pt/Co superlattices show, in general, a scaling of the signal with the amount of Co in the superlattice. Experimentally, however, the signal from Pt/Co superlattices at ∼4 eV is larger than that from bulk Co, despite the lesser total amount of Co. This is due to the magnetization induced in the Pt by the Co. Comparison of the Pd/Co and Pt/Co results with experiment indicates that the magnetization induced in the Pt by the Co plays a more important role in the magneto-optic activity than does the induced magnetization of Pd.

Notes: A biorthogonal set is constructed for a basis of a band representation. A simple fact is used that any band representation can be induced from a one-dimensional representation of a point group (the latter is not necessarily an isotropy group of a Wyckoff position). It is shown that the biorthogonal set has the same symmetry structure as the original basis of the band representation. Symmetry relations are established for the matrix connecting the biorthogonal set with the functions of the original basis.

Notes: It is proven that in the finite phase space of dimensionality M, the number of independent von Neumann states is M−r, where r is the number of distinct zeros of the kq function. When applied to magnetic orbitals, this leads to a linear dependence between them for each zero of the corresponding kq function. Different interesting identities follow from the linear dependence of von Neumann states.

Notes: Faeces of cattle, pronghorn and rabbit were collected from the Central Plains Experimental Range, Colorado, 6, 18 and 30 months after being excreted. The faecal material was placed in moistened potting soil and seedling emergence observed. Bouteloua gracilis (blue grama grass) and Sporobolus cryptandrus (sand drop seed), emerged in abundance from cattle dung. Emergence of B. gracilis decreased with increasing period of exposure before collection, but emergence of S. cryptandrus increased with exposure. Forbs dominated the seedling populations in pronghorn dung, and few seedling populations of any species emerged from rabbit dung. The results are discussed in relation to the effect of large herbivores on the establishment of species from seed in rangeland.

Notes: An elementary formula is derived for the magneto-optic Kerr effect from model superlattices. An exact result is obtained for the case of equal refractive indices for the two constituents of the superlattice. Co/Pt is used as an example of such superlattices for wavelengths in the vicinity of 2 eV. First-order corrections in the difference of the refractive indices are derived which are suitable for treating a variety of materials.

Notes: Simulations are presented for the magneto-optic rotation and ellipticity as a function of Fe thickness in the 0–400 A(ring) range for the system Fe on Au (100). The results, which are based on tabulated bulk optical constants, agree with recent experiments and explicitly demonstrate the role of the Au underlayer in enhancing the signal from the ferromagnetic overlayer.

Notes: Maximal sets of commuting magnetic translations are used for constructing a set of eigenfunctions for a Landau level on a von Neumann–Gabor lattice. Localization and orthogonality turn out to be two conflicting features of this set. It is shown how to construct complete orthonormal sets of optimally localized eigenfunctions on a von Neumann–Gabor lattice for each Landau level. By using the Balian–Low theorem it is pointed out that the uncertainties of the orbit center coordinates cannot both be made finite. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The concepts of von Neumann lattices and tight frames are used for defining discrete quantum mechanical transforms in the phase plane. These transforms are obtained by finite shifts la and mb in the coordinate x and momentum p, respectively, of the Weyl–Heisenberg group, and they are called the discrete Weyl–Heisenberg transforms ψ(la,mb). Here ab=h/N with h the Planck constant, l and m integers, and N a positive integer. A construction is carried out of ψ(la,mb) for a general Weyl–Heisenberg set by using the kq-representation, in which a useful formula is established for the frame operator. The construction is illustrated on an example of the ground state of a harmonic oscillator. It is shown that any physical quantity can be described by the discrete Weyl–Heisenberg transform. Connections are established between ψ(la,mb), the Bargmann representation, and the Husimi distribution function. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.
