Notes: As the implementations of the western development in China, more and more tunnelswill get through the western mountains in China. In order to economize the construction costs, anew type of underground structural form called branching-out tunnel must be applied. The failureprocess of the branching-out tunnel under lateral overload action is also greatly complicated, whichis related with the depth of the mountains, the branching-out angle, the in-situ stress field, thethickness of the middle wall and so on. This paper uses the 3D-physical model of geo-mechanicalmodel tests to study the stability and failure process of this complicated structure, especially the partof the middle wall. The physical model is built up in a new kind of analogy material. In the processof the whole experiments, different lateral pressures imposed on both of the lateral planes of thephysical model. According to different lateral pressures, we have attained the change of the stressand displacement field and looked into the failure process of the pivotal positions in thebranching-out tunnel. We also use finite element method analysis software RFPA (Realistic FailureProcess Analysis) to simulate the whole failure process of the branching-out tunnel. Finally, wehave got the load-bearing safety reliability of this complicated structure through comparativeanalysis of physical modeling and numerical simulation

Notes: Geomechanics model test can simulate the real excavation process of geotechnicalengineering and the mechanics deformation properties of the rockmass prototype on the conditionof meeting the similar principles. In order to conducting geomechanics model test, similarmaterial which can meet similar mechanical properties must be used. It is only after conducting amassive mechanics experiments that a new-type similar materials called iron crystal sand isdeveloped in this paper. This material consists of iron ore powder, blanc fix, quartz sand, gypsumpowder and rosin alcohol solution which are evenly mixed in certain proportion and pressedtogether. The iron ore powder, blanc fix and quartz sand among them are main materials. Therosin alcohol solution is the cementing agent and gypsum powder the regulator. The materialmechanics experiments show that this material has following outstanding characteristics: highvolume-weight, wide variable mechanical parameters, stable performance, low price, quickdrying, simple processing and innocuity. It can simulate most rockmass material from soft to hardones and can be widely used in geomechanics model tests in fields of energy sources, transportation, water conservancy and mining

Notes: Geomechanics model test has some distinctive advantages in simulating changing lawsof stress and strain of rockmass as well as failure mechanism of surrounding rockmass of tunnel. Inorder to systematically study mechanics deformation properties of a large-scale offspur tunnel underexcavation state, we design and manufacture a large scale 3D model test rack installation withhydraulic equipment. The test rack is 3.7 meters long, 2.2 meters wide and 4 meters high, which isthe largest 3D geomechanics model test rack in present Chinese communication trades. Thenew-type similar material of model is a kind of cementitious composite which is mixed with ironore powder, blanc fix, quartz sand, rosin, industrial alcohol and gypsum powder. 3D geomechanicsmodel test for a large-scale offspur tunnel is carried out by utilizing the test installation and thesimilar material. The original design and construction of the offspur tunnel has been effectivelyoptimized by results from model test

Notes: It is very important to choose a similar material which simulates rock mass correctly ingeo-mechanics model test. In this paper, we introduce similar material research status and analyzethe principle of selecting and compounding. According to the experiences of similar materialresearch, we develop a new similar material (we call it iron barites sand cementation material, abbreviate IBSCM) through hundreds of compounding experiment. This similar material is madeup of iron ore powder, barites powder, sand, rosin, alcohol and gypsum powder. Iron ore powder, barites powder and sand are main materials, the solution of rosin and alcohol is glue, and gypsumpowder is regulator. Specimen mechanics tests show that different rock mass can be simulated bythe model materials with different materials compounding. The new similar material is easy tobuy and its price is cheap, and it has some advantages, such as high density, stable performance, easy dryness, and easy cutting. The new similar material can simulate a lot of rock mass, so it isan ideal similar material. At last, we apply this new type similar material to tunnelgeo-mechanical model test and gain the ideal result

Notes: The center hole deformation test of rigid bearing plate is an important method forunderstanding deformation properties of deep weak rock mass. According to the center holedeformation test of rigid bearing plate in dam zone of Dagangshan hydropower station, this paperdetailedly recommends test method of this experiment, and the settlement deformation formula ofdeep rock mass under circular rigid bearing plate is deduced, which could be used to calculatedeformation modulus and equivalence deformation modulus of different deep rock mass at testpoints. According to curves of depth-deformation under different pressures at test points in dam zone,we have analyzed deformation characteristics of deep weak rock mass. By the center hole deformationtest of rigid bearing plate, stratum properties in dam zone of Dagangshan hydropower station could beunderstood further, and it provides important references for the study of creep speciality of weak rockmass in dam zone

Notes: Due to lots of hypothesis, the theoretical analytical solution of the creep parametersinversion can not reflect the in-situ conditions actually. In order to simulate the process of thecompressive creep tests of the in-situ bearing plate, the affection of the stratum distribution and theinfluence of the geological status in site actually, FLAC3D is used and numerical back analysismethod of the creep parameters at dam site is set up. Based on the in-situ compressive creep tests’data of the diabase rock masses at Dagangshan dam site, creep parameters are got with this method. Results indicate that the numerical calculated displacements of the compressive creep are similar tothe in-situ monitoring displacements. It reveals that with this numerical method creep parameterscan be backing analyzed logically. This supplies technical assurances to stability estimate andanalysis of rock masses in slope projects

Notes: This paper introduces many types of analogue materials in China and other countries ingeotechnical model tests. Combined with the study on a few geo-mechanical model tests ofsignificant tunnels and underground openings in Chinese western areas, this paper recommends anew type of analogue material, which is made from iron mineral powder, barite powder, quartzpowder and alcoholic solution with rosin. In order to know the physico-mechanical characteristicsof this composite material with different mixture ratios, we use specimens to do lots of mechanicalexperiments such as uniaxial compressive test, quasi-triaxial shear test, triaxial test and Braziliantest. Consequently, the analogue materials with different mixture ratios can be used to physicallymodel different projects, and this analogue material with a certain mixture ratio has beensuccessfully used in the model test of a branching-out tunnel. The results of the model test verifythat this new analogue material can be successfully used in all kinds of geotechnical model tests

Notes: Machinable silicon nitride/ hexahedral boron nitride (Si3N4/h-BN) composites were in-situsynthesized in a nitrogen (N2) atmosphere by means of combustion synthesis gas-solid reaction withsilicon (Si) powder and h-BN as raw materials. The effect of the volume fraction of h-BN on themachinable properties of Si3N4/BN composite was studied. The results show that Si powder was fullynitrified and no residual Si was found. Microstructures by a scanning electron microscopy (SEM)show Columnar crystals of β-Si3N4 are the main phase and acicular crystals of h-BN disperse β-Si3N4intergranular. With the increasing of the volume content of h-BN, the machinability of the compositeincreases, but the bending strength of composite decreases firstly and then increases. The lowestbending strength is 84.96MPa at 25% volume fraction of h-BN

Notes: Aluminum matrix composites, reinforced by 0.15μm and 5μm Al2O3 particles with 40%volume fractions were fabricated by squeeze casting technique. The microstructure characterizationnear the interfaces of Al2O3p/1070Al composites was investigated by SADP and HREM techniques. Results showed that high-density dislocations were generated in the 5μm-Al2O3p/Al composite dueto the thermal mismatch stress. In contrast, the matrix of the 0.15μm-Al2O3p/Al composite appearedto be nearly free dislocations and some “micro distortion areas” of 1-5nm were observed, whichwas attributed to the dispersion of fine sub-micron particles and uniform distribution of the stressnear the interfaces

Notes: Two MCrAlY overlay coatings (NiCrAlYSi and NiCoCrAlYHf) were deposited on a DSsuperalloy of Ni-Al-Cr-Co-W-Mo-Ta-Hf system by vacuum arc deposition method. The twocoatings show a good protection for the DS superalloy during the isothermal oxidation test at1150[removed info] for 100 h. A continuous alumina-based scale was formed at the surfaces of the coatedspecimens after oxidation. Y2O3, NiO and SiO2 are also detectable in the oxide scale. For theHf-bearing coating, some HfO2 particles exist at the interface between the coating and the substrate. But after the cyclic thermal oxidation at 1100℃, the Hf-free coating exhibited better oxidationresisitance than the Hf-bearing coating. The HfO2 blocks between the coat and the substrate may bethe crack initiation which leads to the failure of the coating
