Notes: In the past decade, artificial neural network(ANN) has been applied in Electricaldischarge machining(EDM). However, most of them only discuss parameter prediction oroptimization result, few tell how to improve generalization performance. In this study, machiningprocess models have been established based on different training algorithms of ANN, namelyLevenberg-Marquardt algorithm (LM), Resilient algorithm (RP), Scaled Conjugate Gradientalgorithm (SCG) and Quasi-Newton algorithm(BFGS). All models have been trained by sameexperimental data, checked by another group data, their generalization performance are compared.Take LM as the example, some main factors that may influence generalization performance arediscussed

Notes: In this paper, a method developed to determine the major, minor and trace elements, including carbon and the four halogens, in seamount phosphorite involving a modern XRF spectrometry technique is described. Ultra-fine (99% v/v 〈 40 μm) powder samples (4 g) were directly pressed into pellets (Φ= 30 mm). For elements having an analytical line lower in energy than the energy of Fe Kα line absorption edge, the inter-element absorption-enhancement effects were corrected using an influence coefficient method. For the other elements, the matrix effects were corrected using the ratio of element peak to Rh Kα Compton peak (for I, Rh K|3 Compton peak was used instead). The relative standard deviation was smaller than 1.0% for the major elements (except C, Na and Cl). The detection limit levels of C, F, Cl, Br and I were 30, 20, 0.8, 0.2 and 0.3 (μg g−1 respectively for 100 s count time of background. The accuracy of this method was tested by evaluating determinations on three certified reference materials. The direct analysis of major and minor elements in geological materials by pressed pellet without any chemical procedures makes XRF spectrometry a particularly environment-friendly analytical technique.

Notes: This paper presents the assembly and the performance of a fuzzy logic control system in regulating a laboratory continuous crossflow grain dryer. With fuzzy control, similar outlet moisture contents and lower outlet breakage susceptibility of corn were obtained as compared to the manually controlled dryer operation. the results verified that drying-induced corn breakage could be reduced through the application of fuzzy logic control. Like the corn drying process, many food processes are difficult to control automatically with conventional control techniques due to their complex nature. Fuzzy logic control provides an attractive solution for control of those processes.

Notes: This paper highlights our recent work on preparation and characterization of nanostructure transition metal (Me) oxide (Me = Mn, Ti and Zr) ion-sieves. The controlled hydrothermal and Sol-Gel method have been developed in the synthesis of ion-sieves by the acid treatment of Li-Me-O tri-oxide precursors. The structure characteristic and ion-exchange property are studied by XRD, TEM, nitrogen adsorption-desorption analysis, lithium ion adsorptive isotherm and kinetics measurement. The result shows that these transition metal oxide ion-sieves, promising in the lithium extraction from brine or seawater, have good selectivity and remarkable adsorption capacity for lithium ions. The maximum adsorption capacity of manganese dioxide and titania by now is 3.47 and 4.02 mmol/g, respectively. The adsorption capacity of zirconia ion-sieve is only 0.675 mmol/g. To the best of our knowledge there is no other report on zirconia with the lithium adsorption property up-to-date.

Notes: We present an econometric technique for modeling endogenous selectivity in households' quantity outcomes as observed in scanner panel data. Simultaneous models of incidence, brand choice and quantity, that treat quantity outcomes as count data, ignore such self-selectivity considerations in quantity outcomes. Previously proposed approaches to modeling selectivity in continuous quantity outcomes do not apply to count data. Therefore, we adopt a recently proposed econometric technique to deal with selectivity in count data, and then appropriately extend it to handle correlations of quantity outcomes not only with incidence outcomes but also with brand choice outcomes. Our proposed methodology will be useful to researchers who want to estimate simultaneous models of whether, what and how much to buy decisions of households, treating quantity data as counts.

Notes: Recent studies have found that when multiple pulses of energy are used for defibrillation with implantable electrodes, the spacing between these pulses is better determined as a percentage of the fibrillation cycle length (CL), rather than as a fixed function of time. Here, this concept is further tested in the transthoracic defibrillation of calves, which are approximately the size of heavy humans. Eleven 90–110 kg calves (101 ± 6 kg) were used in evaluating the effectiveness in achieving transthoracic ventricular defibrillation of ten double pulse waveforms (two 50 A 4-ms rectangular monopulses) having leading edge-to-edge spacings of 4 ms (a 50 A 8-ms rectangular monopulse) and 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, 100, 110, 120, 130 percent fibrillation CL, respectively. In each of these waveforms, the total time when 50 A current was flowing (on time) was 8 ms. Our results show an unequivocal adverse interaction between the pulses, when the spacing is around 60%–70% fibrillation CL; but that the two pulses combined to defibrillate as effectively as a single 8-ms pulse when the spacing is around 110%–130% fibrillation CL. Electrocardiographic analysis suggests that the adverse interaction is due to a refibrillation phenomenon. This study confirms that double pulses can interact and have a negative effect on defibrillation efficacy. Our data suggests that the mechanism of this interaction involves the second pulse reinitiating fibrillation when the pulse separation is in a critical range of values. Our results are also compatible with the hypothesis that the spacing of multiple pulses is better determined as a percentage of the fibrillation CL than as absolute time, although more study is necessary to fully test this hypothesis.

Notes: A new machining method, ultrasonic vibration aided electrical discharge machining(UEDM) in gas, is proposed in this paper. It is shown that electrical discharge machining with ultrasonic vibration aid can be achieved well in gas medium. In the process of UEDM in gas, the tool electrode is formed to be thin-walled pipe, high pressure gas medium is supplied from inside, and ultrasonic vibration is applied to workpiece. The property of ultrasonic is introduced. The same to other sound waves, ultrasonic have the characteristics of reflecting, refracting, intervening andresonance. The mechanism of elastic pole keeping in resonance with ultrasonic transferring from one end to the other end is explained with characteristics of ultrasonic. During the process of UEDM in gas, ultrasonic vibration of workpiece can improve the machining process. The theories of ultrasonic vibration increasing materials removal rate (MRR) are introduced. One theory is that the adhere strength between the metallic liquid drops and workpiece is not enough for theaccelerative vibration, so metallic liquid drops will be ejected off easily. Another theory is that ultrasonic vibration increases the number of the effective discharge
