Notes: Considers a system (machine) that is subject to failure (breakdown). Two characterizations are presented. In the first characterization, the state of the system is described by the real age of the machine and the number of failures incurred to date. In the second characterization, the state of the system is described by the real age of the machine and the virtual age of the machine. In either characterization, upon failure, the unit may undergo a repair which can partially reset the failure intensity of the unit. The degree of reset assumed by the repair is a function of the characterization utilized. The other alternative, at a failure, is to conduct a major overhaul that serves to refresh the failure intensity of the unit. General cost structures, depending upon (real age, number of failures) in characterization one or (real age, virtual age) in characterization two are permitted. The decision, on failure to repair or renew is formulated as a discrete semi-Markov Decision process. Optimal decisions are of the threshold type. The threshold rules depend upon the characterization.

Notes: The effect of the addition of 5 and 10 at.% Cr on the oxidation of a binary Fe-10 at.% Al alloy (Fe-10Al) was studied in 1 atm O2 at 1000°C. Fe-10Al underwent a very slow initial nearly-parabolic stage followed by a breakaway composed of two subsequent parabolic stages with a smaller rate constant for the final period. The two ternary alloys (Fe-5Cr-10Al and Fe-10Cr-10Al) presented two parabolic stages with final rate constants similar to each other and much lower than that for Fe-10Al. The alumina scale developed initially on Fe-10Al was replaced later by a layered scale containing mixtures of Fe and Al oxides plus many Fe-rich oxide nodules. Fe-5Cr-10Al was mostly covered by a thin alumina layer just above the alloy surface with some Fe-rich nodules formed in the beginning of oxidation, which later on were healed by alumina with a large decrease of the oxidation rate. A continuous alumina layer formed on the whole sample surface without any Fe-rich nodule for Fe-10Cr-10Al. Therefore, the addition of chromium is obviously beneficial for the oxidation resistance of Fe-10Al by inhibiting the formation of fast-growing Fe-containing oxides and promoting the development of an exclusive alumina layer. However, the effect of chromium is different from the classical third-element effect

Notes: The problem of an interface edge crack between two dissimilar piezoelectric materials is analyzed under the conditions of anti-plane shear and in-plane electrical loading. The crack is considered to be traction-free, but electric permeable one across which the normal component of the electric displacement are continuous. A series form of electromechanical solution and field intensity factors are obtained. The results show that all fields including strain, stress, electric field strength and electric displacement are singular in the front of crack tip. At last, the stress intensity factor is solved by the boundary collocation method (BCM), numerical results are given and discussed

Notes: Abstract  Photoperiod-sensitive genetic male-sterile (PSGMS) rice, with its male fertility regulated by photoperiod length, is very useful for hybrid rice development. However, breeding for new PSGMS lines has faced two major difficulties – the stability of male sterility and the reversibility of male fertility. In this study we assessed the genetic bases of stability of sterility and fertility reversibility using a molecular marker-based approach. A cross was made between two newly bred PSGMS lines: Peiai 64S, which has a stable sterility but is difficult to reverse to fertility, and 8902S, which has a unstable sterility but is easy to reverse to fertility. The fertility of the parents and of the F1 and F2 populations was repeatedly examined under 11 different long-day and short-day conditions. The genetic effects were assayed by interval mapping and two-way analyses of variance using the F2 data of 128 polymorphic loci representing all the 12 rice chromosomes. The analyses resolved a number of single-locus QTLs and two-locus interactions under both long-day and short day conditions. The interactions involved a large number of loci, most of which were not detectable on a single-locus basis. The results showed that the genetic bases of both stability of sterility and reversibility of fertility are the joint effects of the additive effects of the QTLs and additive-by-additive components of two-locus interactions. The implications of these findings in hybrid rice development are also discussed.

Notes: Abstract. The power of several coherent laser beams can be transferred into a single diffraction-limited signal beam by photorefractive coupling. The efficiency of the power transfer is investigated experimentally in the case of two pump beams. Two different geometrical arrangements, one with overlapping (simultaneous) and the other with separate (sequential) pump beams are compared in a BaTiO3:Ce crystal, with diffusion-driven photorefraction. We measured about the same power transfer efficiency in both arrangements for strong signal beams, but the efficiency was higher in the sequential arrangement for weak signals. A simple theoretical model of the power transfer process based on the standard linear two-wave-mixing theory is presented and the observed stationary beam-coupling behavior for different pump-to-signal intensity ratios is found to be in qualitative agreement with the theoretical predictions.
