Notes: In this article, metallic iron, and iron/platinum alloys nanoparticles have been synthesized via chemical assembly and magnetically characterized. Fabrication of iron and iron/platinum particles was achieved by reducing 0.1 M aqueous metal salts confined in the polar portions of inverse micelles of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide with borohydride. The dc susceptibility of a sample of 8 nm iron nanoparticles exhibits a blocking temperature of 54 K and coercivity of 200 G at 10 K. The presence of the gold coatings prevented oxidation and allowed the samples to be manipulated without additional precautions to prevent oxidation. Two iron/platinum alloys have been synthesized and verified by x-ray powder diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. Magnetic characterization is performed using superconducting quantum interference device magnetometry. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Fe3O4 thin film prepared by pulsed laser deposition on Si (100) substrate has been investigated by transmission electron microscopy from plane and cross-sectional views. The thin film, which shows a spinel structure as characterized by selected-area diffraction, is about 180 nm thick with granular growth of particle size about 50 nm. High resolution electron microscopy observations indicate reduced thickness of the native SiO2 layer between the thin film and Si due to rastering of the substrate surface by an unfocused laser beam before the deposition. By using a 220 diffraction spot in two beam condition near the 〈001〉 axis of a single Fe3O4 grain, antiphase boundaries (APBs) inside the grains could be clearly resolved. The existence of APBs in the thin film is consistent with the magnetic experiments including an open hysteresis loop and unsaturated magnetization in relatively high magnetic fields. This study suggests that APBs are not unique to Fe3O4 films grown on MgO substrates. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: High-pressure high-temperature sintering (HHS) under 1.0, 2.0, 4.0, and 6.0 GPa for a short time was directly used to reduce n-type Nd1.85Ce0.15CuO4−y. Superconductors with higher critical temperature were obtained. The samples display lower resistivity, and more metalliclike resistance behavior at normal state with increasing sintering pressure. A small increase of lattice parameter and cell volume was observed via electron and x-ray diffraction. Transmission electron microscopy studies also show that there is a preferential orientation along the c axis among the neighboring grains. This helps get well-matching grain boundaries in the HHS samples. A Cu2O high-pressure phase was found via energy-dispersive x-ray analysis in the sample treated above 5.0 GPa, which is thought to be a deleterious factor for superconductivity. Sintering under suitable pressure not only enhances the intragranular conductivity, but also effectively improves the intergranular links. Finally, via the assumed interstitial oxygen ordering in the T' structure, a possible mechanism of n-type reduction is proposed based on the change in tolerance factor under reduction atmosphere and high pressure.

Notes: Using an unconventional reduction method, high-pressure sintering at 6.0 GPa and about 600 °C for 20 min, we have produced high-quality n-type Ln1.85Ce0.15CuO4−y (Ln=Pr, Sm, and Eu) superconductors from the as-prepared materials. The samples show higher critical temperatures, higher superconducting phase fractions, and much lower resistances in the normal state than those synthesized by conventional methods. The increase of critical temperature in Eu1.85Ce0.15CuO4−y is most obvious with an onset temperature Tonc and zero-resistance temperature Tc0 of 28.4 and 23.3 K, respectively. High-pressure sintering seems to be effective on the modulation of the fine crystal and electronic structures of n-type systems. In particular, metallic resistance versus temperature behaviors in normal states similar to those found in single crystals and epitaxial films are observed in Sm1.85Ce0.15CuO4−y and Eu1.85Ce0.15CuO4−y, in sharp contrast to the semiconductorlike behaviors in the conventionally prepared samples. From transmission electron microscopy studies, it is found that the compacting and regrowth of the polycrystal under high-pressure sintering greatly improves the weak links at grain boundaries.

Notes: Efficient tunable ultraviolet generation by intracavity frequency doubling of a continuous wave Ti:sapphire laser was demonstrated. Maximum output is obtained of 460 mW at 398 nm corresponding to a total infrared-to-ultraviolet conversion efficiency over 70%. High conversion efficiency was resulted from a critically phase-matched, temperature-tuned lithium triborate crystal and a novel resonator design. The observed laser damage of the crystal coatings is also discussed. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract Activation of Ca2+ and cAMP-dependent Cl− conductances by extracellular ATP was studied using the whole-cell patch clamp technique. Immediately after addition of extracellular ATP (10 μm), activation of wholecell Cl− current exhibiting delayed inactivation and activation kinetics at hyperpolarizing and depolarizing voltages, respectively, was observed. After prolonged activation, the kinetic characteristics of the ATP-induced Cl− current became time- and voltage-independent. When applied to the later phase of the ATP-activated whole-cell current, the disulfonic acid stilbene DIDS (200 μm) could only inhibit 64% of the current while diphenylamine-dicarboxylic acid (DPC, 1 mm) completely inhibited it. Inclusion of a peptide inhibitor for protein kinase A (PKI, 10 nm) in the pipette solution blocked ATP-induced time- and voltage-independent current activation but did not affect the delayed activating and inactivating current activation but did not affect the delayed activating and inactivating current which could be totally blocked by DIDS. Anion selectivity sequence was determined in the presence of either PKI or DIDS and found to be significantly different. Increased pipette EGTA (10 mm) or treatment of the cells with trifluoperazine (40 μm), an inhibitor of calmodulin, suppressed both types of ATP-induced Cl− currents. No current activation by ATP was observed when cells were dialyzed with the IP3 receptor blocker, heparin (10 ng/ml). These results suggest that extracellular ATP activates IP3-linked Ca2+-dependent regulatory pathway, which in turn activates cAMP-dependent pathway, leading to activation of both Ca2+ and cAMP-dependent Cl− conductances in epididymal cells.

Notes: Abstract Detailed transmission electron microscopic study has been carried out on heteroepitaxial YBa2Cu3O7/SrTiO3/YBa2Cu3O7 trilayer thin films grown on (100)SrTiO3 substrates prepared by DC and RF magnetron sputtering. The microstructural results showed the existence of somea-axis-oriented YBCO grains 20–90 nm wide in thec-axis-oriented YBCO matrix. Some of thea-axis grains in the lower YBCO thin film layer have protruded into the above SrTiO3 layer, which may cause short circuit between the two YBCO superconducting layers. This is unsuitable for the application of trilayer thin films for microelectronic devices. The defects on the surface of the substrates would also influence the growth quality of the YBCO thin films.

Notes: The regulatory pathways involved in the ATP-stimulated CI- secretion across rat epididymal epithelium were investigated by the short-circuit current (ISC) technique. Biphasic characteristic was observed in the ISC responded to ATP (0.01-10 m̈M). Inhibitor of P1 receptor, 8-phenyltheophylline (up to 100 m̈M), did not have any effect on both phases of the ATP-stimulated ISC. The order of potency for stimulation of the two phases in ISC was ATP〉ADP〉 AMP, adenosine, consistent with the presence of P2-purinoceptors. CI- channel blocker, disulfonic acid stilbene (DIDS, 300 m̈M), only inhibited the first peak of the ATP-stimulated ISC while diphenylamine-dicarboxylic acid (DPC, 1 mM) reduced both, indicating the involvement of different conductance pathways. DIDS was found to have an inhibitory effect on Ca2+-activated ISC (induced by ionomycin, 10 m̈M) but not cAMP-activated ISC (induced by forskolin, 1 m̈M) which could only be blocked by DPC. Both peaks of the ATP-activated ISC could be significantly inhibited by pretreatment with a Ca2+-chelating agent, BAPTA-AM (50 m̈M). An increase in cellular cAMP content upon stimulation of ATP was measured by radioimmunoassay. No significant increase in cAMP production was observed in cells stimulated with adenosine. The ATP-induced cAMP increase was prevented by pretreatment with BAPTA-AM (100 m̈M) indicating that cAMP production upon ATP stimulation was secondary to an increase in intracellular Ca2+ concentration. These results indicate that the ATP-stimulated CI- secretion could be mediated by Ca2+ and cAMP-dependent regulatory pathways giving rise to the biphasic nature of the ATP-induced ISC. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.
