    Notes: Abstract Assuming that the observed mutation frequency of an amino acid depends on two factors. The first is mutation coefficient which describes the rate of the nucleotide substitution stochastically and the second is the similarity of amino acids which represents the fitness of a mutant under the selective pressure. A statistical theory is proposed and 380 mutation frequencies are calculated, only 10 of which disagree obviously with the observed data.

    Notes: Abstract A new macrocyclic dinuclear iron(III) complex, prepared by condensing 2,6-diformylpyridine N-oxide with 1,3-diaminopropane in the presence of FeCl2·4H2O, and formulated as Fe2LCl6C2H5OH·6H2O, was characterized by its elemental analyses, by i.r., Mo¨ssbauer and e.p.r. spectra, and was investigated electrochemically. The results show that two iron ions are situated in the same chemical environment in the compound and that the electrode reaction can be considered as a double electron-transfer process. The diffusion coefficient is 2.16×10−6 cm2 s−1 and E°′ −0.169 V (versus s.c.e.) and α = 0.37. The average electron transfer rate constant ko′ is 2.8×10−3 cm s−1.

    Notes: Coupled, three-dimensional, time-dependent, incompressible flows in a differentially heated, rotating annulus are simulated using a parallel implementation of the Galerkin finite element method on the Connection Machine 5 (CM-5) supercomputer. The development of baroclinic annulus waves is computed and found to be consistent with previous experimental reseults. The implementation of a repeated spectral bisection element-partitioning technique significantly increases the computation speed over a strategy which randomly maps elements to processors, yielding sustained calculation rates of 8.1 GFLOPS on 512 processors of the CM-5.
