Notes:
This study investigated one important aspect of the physical and mental welfare of patients receiving care in institutional and semi-institutional settings. The study focussed upon the attitudes, assumptions, and sentiments which serve as a basis for a communication between staff members and patients. Beginning with a series of open-ended interviews with staff members of a 400-bed private nursing home, the researchers identified the range of attitudes existing among the staff. Instruments were constructed from these interviews, and the researchers attempted to identify, through factor analysis of staff attitudes and patient evaluations of staff, those attitudes which characterized staff members who were perceived as having beneficial effects on the patients.
