    Notes: We investigate in this paper a photomemory effect in the photocurrent of semi-insulating GaAs when it is illuminated with photons ranging from 1 to 1.35 eV. We observe a strong enhancement of the photocurrent after long excitation with those photons, which is thermally quenched between 123 and 135 K. We explain this phenomenon by a defect reaction, dealing with the association of two or more complex defects, as a result of the electrostatic interaction between the original defects when their charge state is changed by means of the illumination. The formation of this complex drives the sample into a high-sensitivity state, which we have called "on-state.'' The dissociation of the photogenerated complex defect, due to thermal emission of electrons to the conduction band, restores the crystal into its normal photosensitivity state, which we have called "off-state.''

    Notes: The optical quenching of the photoresponse of GaAs when it is subject to a prolonged 1.15-eV optical excitation is one of the most important properties of the EL2 level in GaAs. Another quenching phenomenon takes place after excitation with photons in the same range, that is the optical quenching of the photoresponse in the near band-edge spectral region. Both quenching effects seem to be strongly correlated with changes in the configuration of the EL2 level, due to variations in the charge state of this level. In this way we can conceive a mechanism where EL2 captures electrostatically shallow levels when it is optically ionized at low temperature. By photoconductivity studies, we have seen that capture of shallow levels is accomplished after EL2 has relaxed to a metastable state EL2* which could be described on the basis of a mechanism similar to that recently proposed by M. Levinson.

    Notes: Abstract The applicability of instrumented falling weight impact techniques in characterizing mechanically thermoplastic foams at relatively high strain rates is presented in this paper. In order to try simulating impact loading of foams against sharp elements, an instrumented dart having a hemispherical headstock was employed in the tests. Failure strength and toughness values were obtained from high-energy impact experiments, and the elastic modulus could be measured from both flexed plate and indentation low-energy impact tests. The results indicate a dependence of the failure strength, toughness, and the elastic modulus on the foam density, the foaming process, and the chemical composition. This influence was found to be similar to that of pure nonfoamed materials and also to that observed from low-rate compression tests. The results also indicate that the indentation low-energy impact tests were more accurate in obtaining right values of the elastic modulus than the flexed plate low-energy impact tests usually used to characterize rigid plastics. The foam indentation observed with this test configuration contributes to obtaining erroneous values of the elastic modulus if only a simple flexural analysis of plates is applied.

    Notes: An experimental study on the thermal expansion of a collection of crosslinked low-density polyethylene (LDPE) foams with closed-cell structure is presented. The thermal characterization of these materials, the relationships between the linear thermal expansion coefficient and the structure of the foams, and the determination of the variables that can modify the thermal properties of these products are the goals of this work. The experimental results show that the linear thermal expansion coefficient decreases when the density of the foamed material increases. The gas expansion inside the cells is a mechanism that should be taken into account. Moreover, the thermal expansion also depends on the cellular structure. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J. Polym.     Notes: The two-stage isomerization isotherms of poly(ethylene Terephthalate) have been followed through microhardness analysis. A great variation in microhardness values seems to prove the increase of the strength and stiffness of the samples produced by the secondary isomerization. A smaller variation is observed for the primary isomerization.

    Notes: While well-known methods of bulk analysis of thermal degradation of PVC become standard industrial tools, techniques for the study of surface damage produced by weathering are not generally considered. In this paper we present a new test, based on microhardness measurements, which can be used as a complementary technique for the study of this phenomenon. Comparison of this method with color changes and specific elongation at break measurement has been established for PVC window frames.

    Notes: Talc-filled polypropylene (PP) composites were prepared by extrusion in a wide composition range (0-40 wt %). To improve the affinity relation between talc and the PP matrix, we modified the talc surface with silane coupling agents. Differential scanning calorimetry investigations on test samples, prepared by injection moulding, revealed that the talc content and its surface modification had a pronounced effect on the crystallization behavior of the filled PP composites. The experimental results indicate that a talc concentration of 2 wt % strongly affects the nonisothermal crystallization process of the PP, especially when talc is silane treated Isothermal crystallization experiments on samples with minimum amounts of talc (2 wt %) revealed an improved nucleation activity with silane-treated talc. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: An effective dielectric constant for metal island films has been evaluated using a parametrization of the optical property in terms of the packing factor, the film thickness and a distribution of axial ratios for spheroidal particles. Electron micrographs and plasmon absorption spectra of discontinuous films served as references for parametrical fitting. Enhanced Raman intensities of molecules oriented on the surface of oblate spheroids and a backscattering geometry are discussed.
