Notes: The dc operation of some laser diodes produces high-frequency amplitude modulation of the laser output in the GHz frequency range. This phenomenon provides a simple and inexpensive method for checking the sweep linearity of a fast-gated streak camera.

Notes: The Judean Mountains’ anticlinorium, Israel, a part of the Syrian Arc fold system, underwent several phases of compressional folding, uplift and faulting in post-Turonian through Quaternary times. This study emphasizes the earliest tectonic phase of earIy Late Coniacian age. Ostracode biozonation clearly indicates the duration and extension of Senonian sedimentation and timing of onlap over the evolving Judean Mountains’ structure.

Notes: In a randomized design we examined the interobserver variation in the histopathological diagnosis of adenocarcinoma of the lung and malignant mesothelioma. In three rounds, three pathologists assessed slides from 42 tumours originally diagnosed as adenocarcinomas, malignant mesotheliomas or benign lesions in the pleura. In the first round the assessments were made on haematoxylin and eosin (H & E) stained sections; in the second, on H & E sections plus sections stained with histochemical mucin stains; and in the final round, the diagnoses were made on H & E sections and sections stained with a panel of antibodies against various antigens (cytokeratin, EMA, CEA, Ber-EP4, B72.3, Leu-M1, vimentin and S-100 protein) said to be of value in the differential diagnosis. The overall interobserver agreements for the three rounds were 0.659, 0.802 and 0.817; the kappa values were 0.461, 0.681 and 0.690. It is concluded that differentiation between adenocarcinoma of the lung and malignant mesothelioma should be made on sections stained with H & E and mucin and/or immunohistochemical staining reactions, including antibodies against B72.3. Ber-EP4 and CEA.

Notes: Abstract Background:The aim was to define the MTD of topotecan (TPT) givenbefore cisplatin in patients with previously untreated SCLC. Patients and methods:Alternating cycles A and B to a total of 6cycles were given. Cycle A: TPT days 1–5 and cisplatin (50mg/m2) day 5. Cycle B consisted of teniposide, carboplatin, vincristine, and cisplatin. TPT was escalated at doses 0.75, 1.0, 1.25, and1.5 mg/m2. DLT was defined for the first cycle as grade 4neutropenia with fever or when lasting 〉7 days, or grade 4thrombocytopenia. Results:Fifteen patients with limited disease and six patientswith extensive disease were included. No episodes of DLT were recorded in thefirst cycles A and consequently 1.5 mg/m2 was defined as MTD. At1.5 mg/m2 (11 patients, 30 cycles), four and three episodes ofgrade 4 thrombocytopenia and neutropenia lasting more than seven days occurredin subsequent cycles A. Thrombocytopenia and anaemia were cumulative as morecycles were administrated. Non-hematological toxicity was mild. The responserate was 86% (95% confidence interval (95% CI):64%–97%) with 33% (95% CI:15%–57%) achieving CR. Conclusions:1.5 mg/m2 TPT can be delivered safely with50 mg/m2 cisplatin on day 5 in patients with previously untreatedSCLC.

Notes: Summary We evaluated sympathetic nervous system function in a patient with primary orthostatic hypotension. Plasma catecholamine levels — ecept for dopamine levels — and urinary catecholamine excretion were decreased, alpha-adrenoreceptor responsiveness to noradrenaline and beta-adrenoreceptor responsiveness to isoproterenol were increased according to increased beta-2-adrenoreceptor density on intact polymorphonuclear leukocytes. Alpha-2-adrenoreceptor density on intact platelets and adrenaline-induced platelet aggregation in vitro, however, were unchanged. We evolved a therapeutic regimen with fludrocortisone, propranolol, and dihydroergotamine that allowed the patient to resume nearly a regular degree of mobility.

Notes: Abstract Five albino female rats which had been trained to run a maze were exposed to 3 nanosecond pulses of electromagnetic energy which had a density of 600,000 v/m2. A disturbance of the ability of the animals to perform this recently learned task was observed. The effect was found to be reversible within a period of 30 min. Possible mechanisms by which the decision making strategy of the animals was temporarily disrupted are considered. The parallelism between the conditions of this experiment and those attending the exposure of animals to lightning bolts during electrical storms is pointed out.

Notes: Summary We introduce a new Skorohod topology for functions of several variables. Since ann-variable function may be viewed as a one-variable function with values in the set of (n−1)-variable functions, this topology is defined by induction from the classical Skorohod topology for one-variable functions. This allows us to define the notion of completen-parameter symmetric Markov processes: Such processes are, for any 1≤p≤n, rawp-parameter Markov processes (in the sense of our previous paper [17]) with values in the space of (n−p)-variable functions. We prove, for these processes and their Bochner subordinates, a maximal inequality which implies the continuity of additive functionals associated with finite energy measures. We finally present several important examples.

Notes: Summary We study a class of multiparameter symmetric Markov processes. We prove that this class is stable by subordination in Bochner's sense. We show then that for these processes, a probabilistic and an analytic potential theory correspond to each other. In particular, additive functionals are associated with finite energy measures, hitting probabilities are estimated by capacities, quasicontinuity corresponds to path-continuity. In the last section, examples show that many earlier results, as well as new ones, in this domain can be obtained by our method.
