Notes: The elastic strain limit of polycrystalline mixed AgClxBr1−x fibers was studied. These fibers are useful as flexible infrared optical fibers, and the elastic bending regime is preferred for applications which require many bending cycles. The experimental method was based on the spring-back upon releasing a stressed material, and used specifically calculated expressions. Elastic strain limit values are in the range of 0.15%–0.4%. They depend on composition going through a maximum at around the AgCl0.5Br0.5 composition. The dependence on composition is explained by a theoretical model, which is based on a solid-solution internal stress field, and uses material constants.

Notes: Silver halide infrared transmitting optical fibers are used in a noncontact mode to deliver and collect infrared radiation from a thin liquid sample on a highly reflecting substrate. The detected signal is a sensitive measure of the absorption spectrum of the liquid under study. Optimal placement of the fibers with respect to the sample was calculated and experimentally confirmed. The system provides a quantitative infrared spectrum with minimal sample preparation.

Notes: The absorption spectrum in the 9–11 μm range of both undeformed and plastically deformed AgBr crystals and polycrystalline optical fibers was investigated by tunable laser calorimetry. The observed spectral features are discussed in terms of the crystal defect structure. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Grating coupled emission Pb1−xSnxSe/Pb1−x−yEuySnxSe double-heterostructure stripe-geometry diode lasers were fabricated using molecular beam epitaxy. Low-divergence far-field patterns of ∼5° for multimode operation and ∼2° for single-mode operation were obtained. These are the lowest values ever achieved with Pb salt lasers.

Notes: Electromagnetic (microwave or radio frequency) field-induced heating is used in industrial, medical, and domestic applications. In most cases, efficient, rapid, and controllable heating is needed. A problem with this heating modality is the difficulty in gaining an accurate measurement of temperature in the presence of a strong electromagnetic field. A simple infrared fiber-radiometer system has been developed for thermometry in the presence of these strong electromagnetic fields. The radiometer was used to measure temperatures in the range 0–70 °C, with an accuracy of ±0.5 °C. The signal obtained varied almost linearly with temperature.

Notes: A novel concept of a fiber optic distributed sensor is presented. In particular, we describe a distributed thermal sensor formed by inducing a deliberated absorption in an infrared optical fiber. The increased absorption coefficient αab of this modified fiber determines the linear sensing length of the distributed thermal sensor. When part of the modified fiber is heated, infrared radiation is generated in the fiber and transmitted through it to its distal face. Measuring this radiation power with a radiometer, we are able to determine the average spatial temperature distribution along the fiber sensing length.

Notes: Optical absorption edges of mixed AgClxBr1−x (0≤x≤1) crystals and polycrystalline fibers were investigated as a function of composition. Both visible edge, resulting from electronic transitions, and infrared edge due to multiphonon processes behave as the one-mode (amalgamation) type of mixed crystals, shifting continuously with composition. Quantitative expressions were used to discuss the results. Polycrystalline extruded fibers preserve this spectral window of silver-halide crystals, except for slight deviations which are explained by the small-grain structure of the fibers.

Notes: Mechanical properties of mixed AgClxBr1−x (0≤x≤1) crystals and extruded polycrystalline optical fibers were investigated as a function of composition. The microhardness of as-grown crystals, annealed samples, and fiber-end faces show solid-solution hardening in agreement with the Kataoka–Yamada model [Jpn. J. Appl. Phys. 16, 1119 (1977)]. The fibers have a tensile strength of 50–90 MPa with similar solid-solution strengthening. The infrared transmission of 0.9-mm-diam fibers is not reduced significantly upon bending them 90° on a 3-mm radius. Such mixed-crystal-based silver-halide fibers are suitable for many infrared optical applications.

Notes: Distributed Bragg reflector Pb1−xSnxSe/Pb1−x−yEuySnxSe double heterostructure stripe geometry diode lasers were fabricated using molecular-beam epitaxy. Single-mode cw operation at about 7.8 μm was obtained for heat-sink temperatures in the range 25–75 K. the single-mode continuous tuning range was 10 cm−1. Tuning the diodes via the injection current, a range of 24 cm−1 was completely covered with single-mode emission. The reason for this wide tuning range was mode hopping to lower frequencies rather than the usual hopping to higher frequencies.

Notes: Infrared spectroscopic measurements of liquids were performed in an attenuated total internal reflection cell, using infrared transparent silver halide fibers. As an example, we studied evanescent wave absorption in water. In particular, we analyzed absorption dependence on various physical parameters, such as the length of the absorbing medium and the geometry of the beam at the fiber entrance and exit faces. Absorption peaks were easily traced and experimental results correlated well with theoretical calculations. These studies may lead to practical uses of fiberoptic-based evanescent wave spectroscopy.
