Notes: The magnetization (M) in IV–VI based diluted magnetic semiconductors is expressed as a sum of contributions due to isolated impurities, pair interactions, lattice diamagnetism, and spin density due to carriers. We calculate the contribution of each of these mechanisms for p-type Pb1−xMnxTe for different x and magnetic field (H) and compare the results with experiment.

Description / Table of Contents: Résumé.
Notes: Summary. A girl, 15 years of age, with humero-radial, humero-ulnar, intercarpal and intermetacarpal synostosis, associated with a deficient ulna and a cleft hand, is described. Classification was difficult. She was fitted with a prosthesis.

Notes: Abstract The paper presents a simple method to compute the stability parameter Z/L and boundary-layer parameters such as friction velocity U * and surface heat flux Q 0 on an operational basis. The method is based on the autocorrelation function of the vertical velocity which is relatively insensitive to averaging times except for very large lag times. Eddy correlation techniques on the other hand are very sensitive to averaging times.

Notes: Abstract An extensive data base of LIDAR and photographically measured plumes from the Nanticoke thermal generating station (located on the north shore of Lake Erie) has been accumulated over several years of full-scale atmospheric experiments. Analysis of the data shows that the empirical entrainment constant used in the Briggs simple plume rise formulation has a value of 0.8, which is significantly larger than 0.6 found by Briggs (1975). A hypothesis is proposed that mesoscale eddies present in the land/lake environment are responsible for vertical plume meander leading to the observed enhanced vertical plume spread and lower mean plume rise at this site. This is substantiated through theoretical considerations and experimental data. The results are significant in the computation of ground-level concentrations at such complex terrain sites.

Notes: Abstract The assumption of vertical uniform mixing in shoreline fumigation models is tested using two types of modifications to a base statistical model that takes into account non-uniform mixing. One of the modifications involves the use of a downdraft velocity scheme developed for a convective boundary layer. The other modification is based on an empirical adjustment factor derived from water tank experiments. Results from all three models are compared with field observations. Comparisons indicate that the modifications do not improve the results of the base dispersion model.

Notes: Abstract Experimental data for buoyant plumes released from high sources into layers having little ambient turbulence show that plume dispersion parameters vary in a manner similar to that during initial plume rise. This is consistent with general plume rise theory. Dispersion of plumes from tall stacks in a shoreline environment where a thermal internal boundary layer is formed often demonstrates this behaviour.

Notes: Abstract This paper describes the verification of a dispersion model for a shoreline environment developed by the author in an earlier paper. It is shown that the observed concentration field reported in a case study agrees well with model predictions. Emphasis has been given to verification of the location of the maximum ground-level concentration and the downwind trend of the concentration field. This is because time-averaged concentrations are dependent on averaging time. Since a model generally predicts ensemble average concentrations which may not be achieved within half-hour periods within a convective boundary layer, numerical comparisons may not be very meaningful. Nevertheless, good agreement is found for the case study under consideration.

Notes: Abstract During the period from June 1982 to March 1983, there was a prolonged shutdown of the INCO and Falconbridge smelters at Sudbury, Ontario. Taking advantage of this opportunity, the Air Resources Branch of the Ontario Ministry of the Environment undertook a detailed analysis of the impact that the resulting emission reductions had on the atmospheric deposition of acidity and SOX in Ontario. This paper summarizes the various meteorological analyses and mathematical modeling estimates that were carried out in order to determine the contribution of the Sudbury smelters to atmospheric deposition in Ontario. For sulfates, the Sudbury contribution to the total wet deposition was typically less than 15% at the receptors studied. Furthermore, the smelters were found to contribute on the order of 10 to 20% of the total dry deposition of S compounds in central and northeastern Ontario, and less than 10% elsewhere.

Notes: Twenty polystyrene-g-gelatin samples were synthesised using Ce(IV) as the free radical initiator in order to make biodegradable polystyrene. Recovery of polystyrene from acid hydrolysis of the grafted sample and the appearance of new bands of gelatin at 3479 cm-1, 3235 cm-1, 1060 cm-1 and 1370 cm-1 in the IR spectrum of the grafted polystyrene sample constituted evidence of grafting, which was substantiated by evidence from 13C NMR. Thermal studies, X-ray diffraction analysis, spectral analysis, viscosity measurements, and swelling behaviour characterised the potentially biodegradable polystyrene samples. A plausible mechanism for grafting and the probable structure of the grafted sample are suggested. Degradation studies are in progress.
