Notes: We have measured the anisotropic magnetoresistance of Fe films exchange coupled to antiferromagnetic MnF2 layers. Exchange bias and coercivity obtained from magnetoresistance are in close agreement with superconducting quantum interference device magnetometry data. In addition the magnetoresistance reveals an asymmetry in the magnetization reversal process, despite the fact that the magnetization hysteresis loops show little shape asymmetry. These results correlate well with an earlier study of magnetization reversal asymmetry by polarized neutron reflectometry. The data imply that the magnetization reverses by coherent rotation on one side of the loop and by nucleation and propagation of domain walls on the other. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Langmuir probes have been used to measure the electrostatic Reynolds stress and the floating potential fluctuation in the boundary plasma of the Hefei Tokamak-7 (HT-7) [J. Li, B. N. Wan, and J. S. Mao, Plasma Phys. Controlled Fusion 42, 135 (2000)]. The cross bispectrum of 〈V˜rV˜θφ˜f〉 indicates the existence of difference-frequency nonlinear phase coupling and the generation of fluctuations near the geodesic acoustic mode frequency. The inverse cascade process might be linked to the generation of zonal flows by small-scale electrostatic drift-wave turbulence. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We describe a novel thermal characterization technique based on a differential arrangement, which achieves spatially localized calorimetric analysis. It involves the use of an active probe which acts both as a highly localized heat source and a thermometer. This ability opens the way for the implementation of scanning calorimetric microscopy where image contrast will be created from thermal analysis data. For a number of polymers we have recorded events such as glass transitions, meltings, recrystallizations and thermal decomposition within volumes of material estimated at a few μm3. The data obtained are compared with those obtained from conventional calorimetry and the events registered in both cases are found to match. For a full quantitative analysis of the results obtained, mathematical modelling of the operation of the technique, taking account of physical and other changes in materials, is required. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Hereditary progressive mucinous histiocytosis is a rare autosomal dominant non-Langerhans cell histiocytosis. We describe a sporadic case of this syndrome in a 64-year-old woman who had multiple dark-red dome-shaped papulonodules located mainly on the back of her hands, forearms and thighs. Light microscopy revealed a circumscribed upper dermal aggregate of ovoid or spindle-shaped histiocytes with abundant mucin deposition. Iron deposits and numerous mast cells were scattered throughout the tumour but giant cells were rare. Electron microscopy revealed a high number of zebra bodies and myeloid bodies in the cytoplasm of the histiocytes. Immunohistochemistry showed positive labelling with alpha-1 antitrypsin, Factor XIIIa and CD68, while CD1a, CD34 and S100 protein were negative. The differential diagnosis of histiocytic syndromes is discussed.

Notes: We have investigated light-emission characteristics of a white-light-emitting electroluminescent device with a doubly doped ZnS:Pr,Ce,F phosphor layer. We found that optimum codoping of Ce enhances the emission characteristics compared to the electroluminescent device with a singly doped ZnS:Pr,F layer. We also found that introducing an additional thin-insulating SixNy interlayer between the lower insulating layer and the phosphor layer significantly stabilizes the aging characteristics and improves the luminous efficiency. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We observed a decrease of the number of effective emission centers Mn2+ in the aged ZnS:Mn electroluminescence (EL) devices compared to the fresh EL devices using the electron-paramagnetic-resonance technique. Such phenomena can take place during the operation of the EL device, since the isolated Mn can easily diffuse into another site and forming cluster. Another possible explanation is that Mn2+ changes into Mn1+ or Mn3+ by transferring the electronic charge of the isolated Mn2+ to the neighboring Mn ions via sulfur and/or sulfur vacancy. As a result, luminance is lowered due to the decrease in the number of efficient emission centers of isolated Mn2+. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The influence on magnetic field on 1/f noise in a planar GaAs resistor grown by molecular-beam epitaxy and without surface effects was investigated experimentally. The experimental results can be explained by the number fluctuation model but not by the mobility fluctuation model. Previously, experimental results indicating number fluctuation type of 1/f noise were mostly attributed to the surface effects associated with the particular structures used for the experiments. In our device the surface effects were diminished so that the fluctuations of the bulk current could be considered to produce the 1/f noise.

Notes: In this study we have analyzed CD30-antigen expression in three melanoma-directed cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) clones with a T helper 0 (Th0)-like cytokine secretion profile (i.e. interleukin (IL)-4, IL-5, and interferon (IFN)-γ). We show that all CTL clones expressed high levels of CD30 upon contact with the autologous tumour cells. One CTL clone, termed A2 with a monoclonal feature was selected for further analyses and found its CD30 expression dependent on the presence of IL-4. Functionally, a CD30-expressing A2 CTL was capable of producing higher amounts of IFN-γ (up to 1.5-fold) and IL-4 (up to two-fold) than its CD30− counterpart. Furthermore, CD30-positive A2 CTL displayed an at least three-fold greater proliferative response to the tumour cell stimulation, contrasting with CD30− CTL. However, the antitumour cytotoxic activity of A2 CTL was not modulated by the CD30 expression. These results suggest that CD30 antigen can be inducible on a subset of tumour-directed CD8+ CTL, and that this subset of cells may have profound effector functions, such as cytokine secretion, proliferation, and cytotoxicity.
