Notes: In order to determine the magnitude and the position of the plasma current in a long pulsed tokamak such as the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER), it is urged to establish a reliable method which is free from the zero-level drift of the integrator as well as the radiation damage for the steady-state magnetic field measurement. For this purpose, we have developed a hybrid system, a combination of a conventional magnetic probe for the measurement of fast varying magnetic field and a rotating coil magnetic probe for that of slowly varying field. The rotating coil is energized by an air turbine to avoid electromagnetic interference and the induce signal with a constant rotation frequency is picked up through a transformer to eliminate mechanical contacts. An automatic gain control circuit is also designed for the compensation of rotation speed fluctuation. The system is proved to achieve a flat frequency response with a proper choice of cross over frequency for high- and low-frequency systems. The rotating coil probe is tested for over 170 h without any trouble. The probe was applied to the poloidal magnetic field measurement on the TRIAM-1M long pulsed tokamak, and proved to work satisfactorily. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Baking (Pb, La)(Zr, Ti)O3 capacitors in a hydrogen atmosphere causes a significant loss of remanent polarization even at 150 °C. The hysteresis variations depend on the polarization states during baking. The hysteresis loop showed voltage shifts when the capacitor was polarized before baking, whereas it became a cramped shape when the baking was carried out on a virgin capacitor. Although remanent polarization diminished in all cases, saturation polarization was not suppressed. The clamped hysteresis loop can be described as an average of two loops shifted to positive and negative voltages. The results indicate that the loss of remanent polarization is not due to the suppression of switching, but due to the shift of the hysteresis of each domain larger than the coercive voltage. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract: High-spin states in 183Os have been studied by means of in-beam γ-ray spectroscopy. Two isomers with I π= ((43/2)−) and (43/2)+ have been identified at excitation energies of E x = 5.068 and 5.168 MeV. The half-lives are determined as T 1/2= 27 ± 3 and 24 ± 2 ns.

Notes: Abstract: The lifetime of the first 2+ state in the nucleus 124Ba has been measured by γ-γ coincidence recoil-distance Doppler shift method. The 109Ag(19F, 4n)124Ba reaction at a beam energy of 75 MeV was employed to populate excited states in 124Ba. The mean lifetime was determined to be 275(12) ps using the differential decay curve method. The value of B(E2;01 +→ 21 +) for 124Ba deduced from the lifetime is in reasonable agreement with the prediction of the proton-neutron interacting boson model(IBM-2) without Pauli blocking effect.

Notes: Abstract We present a case of well differentiated endometrioid adenocarcinoma of the endometrium in a 29-year-old woman, developing 6 months after an atypical polypoid adenomyoma (APA) was diagnosed by curettage. Four cases of APA with coexistent endometrial adenocarcinoma were recently reported. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of endometrioid adenocarcinoma following conservative treatment for an APA. Since APA may be associated with the development of adenocarcinoma, careful follow-up with hysteroscopy and endometrial sampling is recommended in a woman with APA who desires continued fertility.

Notes: Abstract The MR findings in a case of tumor extension into an inferior vena cava from a right renal angiomyolipoma are reported. The flow void demonstrated within the intracaval tumor thrombus on T1-weighted images was consistent with the so-called thread-and-streaks sign.

Notes: Abstract Transmission electron diffraction from repeatedly rubbed α-alumina revealed a structure that was created as the sum of the contributions of several different aluminas. Owing to the lack of regularity in the atomic arrangement, this structure may not be considered as being crystalline although it is not an amorphous structure. The transformation to this state can be one of the mechanisms of plastic deformation during repeated rubbing.

Notes: Summary Sensitivity of building-energy consumption to changing urban environments is examined by simulating building energy loads in hypothetical urban settings. A modified version of an algorithm developed by the U.S. Army Construction Engineering Research Laboratory is used to evaluate energy requirements. Energy loads for two buildings of interest are estimated for changing climatic conditions (air temperature) as well as changing environments around the building. An isolated building and a building surrounded by several other buildings are considered. Results indicate that climate warming may lead to energy savings in a wide range of climates while savings also depend on the nature of the building and its use. In cool climates, climate warming forces net energy-load decreases through reductions of the winter heating loads. For example, a one-degree increase in annual air temperature in Duluth led to a 10 kWh decrease in net energy loads for a small office building. In warm climates, urbanization tends to accelerate energy consumption although shadowing may contribute significantly to decreases in summer cooling loads. In Phoenix, annual mean daily net energy loads decreased by about 10 kWh due to shadowing for the same office building. Even in relatively cool regions, summer cooling-load reductions caused by shadowing are effective.
