Notizen: Relatives expressed emotion (EE) is a known risk factor for relapse among recovering psychiatric patients. Recent research has focused on the behavioral correlates of EE, seeking better understanding of the family processes associated with this important variable. The present study used sequence analysis to explore interactions of high-EE and low-EE parent-child dyads in a sample of disturbed adolescents. High-EE mother-child interactions were characterized by bidirectional influence, and, in contrast to adolescents in low-EE dyads, adolescents in high-EE dyads had an oppositional style of responding. In Low-EE mother-child interactions, the adolescents showed more temporal consistency (stability) of affect than their high-EE counterparts. Overall, the results suggest that high-EE mother-child dyads constitute more tightly joined emotional systems than low-EE dyads. Consequently, interventions designed to reduce this connectedness might also reduce the risk of adolescent psychiatric problems.

Notizen: [Auszug] The three-dimensional structure of calmodulin has been determined crystallographically at 3.0 Å resolution. The molecule consists of two globular lobes connected by a long exposed α-helix. Each lobe binds two calcium ions through helix–loop–helix domains similar to those of ...

Notizen: Abstract Edmonds and Giles introduced the class of box totally dual integral polyhedra as a generalization of submodular flow polyhedra. In this paper a geometric characterization of these polyhedra is given. This geometric result is used to show that each TDI defining system for a box TDI polyhedron is in fact a box TDI system, that the class of box TDI polyhedra is in co-NP and is closed under taking projections and dominants, that the class of box perfect graphs is in co-NP, and a result of Edmonds and Giles which is related to the facets of box TDI polyhdera.

Notizen: Abstract The discovery of a new maize (Zea mays L.) transposon system, Mutator, and the cloning of the 1.4 kilobase transposon, Mul, have made feasible the isolation of nuclear photosynthetic genes which are recognized only by their mutant phenotype. Mutant maize plants which express a high chlorophyll fluorescent (hcf) phenotype due to a defect in the electron transport or photophosphorylation apparatus have been isolated following mutagenesis with an active Mutator stock. The affected genes and their products in these mutants are inaccessible to classical methods of analysis. However, mutagenesis with the Mutator transposon makes it possible to isolate these genes. Although the PSII-deficient mutant hcf3 has been thoroughly studied by classical photo-biological methods, the nature of the lesion which results in the observed phenotype has not been established. A Mutator-induced allele of hcf3 has been isolated. A fragment of genomic DNA has been identified which is homologous to Mul and co-segregates with the mutant phenotype. This fragment is expected to contain a portion of the hcf3 locus which will be used to clone the normal gene. Direct study of the gene can provide insight into the nature and function of its polypeptide product. This approach can be used to study any photosynthetic gene which has been interrupted by a transposon. The isolation of more than 100 different chemically-induced hcf mutants, most of which can not be fully characterized using classical means, indicates the wealth of information which can be obtained using a transposon tagging technique.
