    Notes: The theory of Liapunov exponents of Hamiltonian systems is reviewed and the connection between vanishing Liapunov exponents and constants of motion is discussed. There are at least 2 N vanishing Liapunov exponents if there are N independent constants of motion. The Liapunov exponents are then used to determine the relative weight of the irregular motion on the energy shell as well as the Kolmogorov–Sinai entropy for two model systems. The trajectory and the stability matrix from which the Liapunov exponent is deduced are integrated with the aid of a Taylor-expansion integration scheme.

    Notes: Background: Sinus node dysfunction is a frequent complication of Fontan-type procedure. Epicardial pacing is considered as the standard treatment for these patients. Methods and Results: We evaluated an endocardial approach in seven patients using a 4.1 French bipolar lumenless lead (SelectSecure) that is positioned through a steerable guiding catheter. Either a purely transvenous or an open transatrial approach can be used for lead placement. The smallest child weighed 12 kg. Individual anatomy was assessed preimplantation using magnetic resonance imaging and injection of radiographic contrast agent through the guiding catheter. A pullback pressure recording was used to confirm unimpaired blood flow into the pulmonary artery. Five of our seven patients underwent de novo transvenous atrial lead implantation for AAIR pacing. In the remaining two patients, both atrial and ventricular leads were inserted. One patient with an intraatrial tunnel underwent transvenous-lead placement. The remaining patient with an extracardiac conduit received atrial and ventricular leads implanted through a guiding catheter inserted through an atriotomy. The postoperative management included short- or long-term oral anticoagulation. Conclusions: Transvenous endocardial lead implantation avoids the problem of increasing capture thresholds typically observed with epicardial leads. Due to its high tensile strength and lumenless design, the isodiametric lead is expected to remain extractable for an extended period of time.

    Notes: Advances in the time propagation of multidimensional wave packets are exploited to present the A-band photodissociation dynamics of methyl iodide for five active vibrational modes on the three relevant excited ab initio potential surfaces. The five modes considered represent all of the experimentally observed dynamical activity. The only modes neglected are the asymmetric C–H stretch and the asymmetric deformation of the methyl group. The kinetic energy operator corresponding to these five degrees of freedom is derived. The fully quantum mechanical calculation was implemented upon grids using 2880 distinct time-dependent configurations, determined by the multiconfigurational time-dependent Hartree algorithm, for each electronic state. All of the currently known experimental results regarding the umbrella vibration, symmetric C–H stretching vibration, perpendicular rotation, and parallel rotation of the photodissociated methyl radical fragment are well reproduced. The full wavelength dependence of all of these quantities is determined. The wavelength dependence of the energy deposited into translational, vibrational, and rotational motion is also given. The time evolution of the modes is presented in the context of correlated motion and its effect upon the dissociative process. Many of the details of the dynamics inherent to the conically intersecting nature of the excited surfaces is delineated. In particular it is shown that the Jahn–Teller distortion of the 1Q1 state is irrelevant in contributing to the perpendicular character of resonance Raman depolarization ratios. Results are compared and contrasted to previous calculations employing the collinear pseudotriatomic model with optimized empirical surfaces or the bent pseudotriatomic model with the same ab initio surfaces.

    Notes: Zusammenfassung Es wird über vier Hirntumoren berichtet, bei denen die Frage Gliom oder Tumor der Meningen makroskopisch nicht entschieden werden konnte. Es werden die diagnostischen Besonderheiten der meningealen Tumoren (Arachnotheliome), der Gliome und der Gliome der Meningen in Zusammenhang besprochen. Hierbei wird insbesondere der Ähnlichkeit der im Schrifttum wiedergegebenen Gliome der Meningen mit unseren in der Hirnrinde gelegenen Gliomen gedacht. An Hand von schematischen Zeichnungen wird gezeigt, wie es zu der weitgehenden Ähnlichkeit dieser verschiedenen Geschwulstgruppen durch besondere Lage kommen kann. Hierzu kommt die Ähnlichkeit im histologischen Bild, die unter anderem durch starke Entwicklung von Bindegewebe hervorgerufen wird.

    Notes: Zusammenfassung Es wird über eine Hirngeschwulst der linken Schläfengegend berichtet, die sich schon kurz nach der Geburt durch eine Vorwölbung des Schädelknochens bemerkbar gemacht hat. Bemerkenswerterweise traten die ersten klinischen Erscheinungen erst 23 Jahre später auf. Die Sektion ergab eine Neubildung, wie sie in gleicher Weise bisher wohl noch nie beobachtet wurde. Es handelte sich um ein nahezu die ganze linke Hemisphäre einnehmendes Fibromyxom, dessen besondere Eigenart in „Faserkugeln” bestand, deren Entstehung aus vakuolig degenerierten Fibroblasten nachgewiesen werden konnte.
